In the reading given we have been presented a setting of the ancient philosopher Socrates and a close friend Crito having a dialogue in the prison were Socrates was awaiting execution. Crito is a close friend to Socrates and has come to the prison to convince him to escape to save his life. The beginning of the dialogue is basically Socrates and Crito going back and forth on why he should escape, Crito gives three main reasons why Socrates should escape. First Crito says that Socrates is one of his true friends someone who can never be replaced, second Crito also says that if he allowed Socrates to die then many people would accuse him of being a failure as a friend, lastly Crito says that Socrates would be irresponsible if he left his kids …show more content…

Socrates asks Crito if he would take the advice of a majority of people or rather the advice of an experienced specialist, Crito agrees that the advice from an experienced specialist is valued more than a majority. he uses this example to compare Crito to those who imprisoned him, Socrates says that it is unethical for one who has been put in prison by the established leaders to escape by any unlawful means. Socrates says that if he should intentionally do what is wrong he would be forfeiting the principle he has been following and that would make him an unjust enemy of the state. Socrates believes that you cannot repay an injustice with an injustice since one should never act unjustly. Crito agrees with Socrates that a harm should not be repaid with harm however he believes that Socrates was unjustly punished. Socrates says that his punishment was just because he is a child of the state and he has lived by these laws for many years indicating that he accepts them or else he could’ve left Athens.
