Introduction/Problem How many times have you tossed a small gum wrapper out the window while driving down the road? Almost all of us can admit to having thrown some type of trash on the ground at least once before. While throwing out a gum wrapper may not be as drastic as throwing out a bag filled with trash, these minor items we think are no big deal are part of the reason littering has become such an out of control problem. So many of us think that throwing one small thing out may not be such a big deal. However, if everyone in the world threw out one small thing, that would already be seven billion pieces of trash in our environment. The estimated cost of litter pickup is thirty cents per piece of trash, and with one mile of highway containing about sixteen thousand pieces of trash, that is already four thousand eight hundred dollars spent on litter pickup (“NCDPS”). Why should we allow so much of our hard earned money to be used when we could just avoid littering altogether and have extra money in our pocket?
Although littering may not always be intentional, sixty percent of pedestrians and forty percent of motorist deliberately do it (“NCDPS”). Because of all the littering being done, there is an island of trash two times the size of Texas floating in the Pacific Ocean (Cruice-Barnett). This enormous amount of trash damages our environment more and more each day. Some of the solutions for littering are completely free of cost and take little to no effort. The easiest (and most obvious) solution is to set a good example by not littering (Cathy). If more and more people take it upon themselves not to litter, others will follow the pattern. Another cost-free solution that you and your family can partake in is cleaning up litter around your house once a week (Cathy). By everyone keeping clean just a small portion of their community, like their yard, the entire community will increase in cleanliness without one or two people having to do it all. As for public places that no one is solely responsible for, prisoners should be taken out more to do community service by helping clean litter on side of highways, public buildings, and anywhere else in the community that may need cleaning. A few other solutions include keeping a small bag for trash in your car that can be emptied out weekly and asking friends and neighbors to keep their own property clean (Cathy). Finding out how you can plant and maintain flowers along curbs or sidewalks is another way to make the temptation of littering a little less. People litter less when areas look more appealing
