They have changed the modern world in many different ways. One invention s the submarine. Since South Carolina is a navy and marine state, the people there like exploring the oceans. Because of that invention, now we can go underwater with submarines and submersibles thanks to South Carolina. Another amazing invention, or movie and comic, is the X-Men. It became very popular and is known all over the world now! They are the most well known group of super heroes, other than the Avengers. South Carolina had many important battles fought on its territory, Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter is an island in the Charleston Harbor, its main purpose for being built was to protect the harbor. The Confederacy felt like the Charleston harbor would be a key port in this area. When the first shots were fired, at Fort Sumter, by the Confederate soldiers this began one of the darkest periods in American history.

One would ruminate that 1100 men equipped with 30 pieces of artillery defending an un-finished fort would be no match for three thousand men and nine war ships armed with 270 cannons. Contrarily, on 28 June 1776 during the Revolutionary War, the American Forces proved a decisive victory against the British, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence was days later. The Patriots, under the leadership of Colonel William Moultrie, made a fort of the indigenous Sabal (cabbage) Palmetto Palm tree and took advantage of the British’s poor planning and lack of integration for a decisive American victory. Due to this battle, the Palmetto Palm tree was added to South Carolina’s state flag in 1861, and to this day, 28 June 1776 is termed South Carolina’s Independence Day. If someone is from out of town and needs directions to a certain place southerners will make sure he or she knows how to get there before he or she leaves them. Southerners are very polite. Every time we pass someone on the rode, we are going to wave at him or her. Towns in the South have fewer people and everyone knows everyone. The first thing I wanted to find out was what has happened in South Carolina’s history. I learned that Harleston Green was the first golf course in the United States. South Carolina [SC] has more than 350 golf course around the state. The size of SC is 32,021 square miles. South Carolina became a state on May 23, 1788. The tree is very important to the state and it’s called a palmetto. During the American Revolutionary War, the British struck the fort on Sullivan’s Island and that was near Charleston. When they fired cannonballs, they bounced off the palmetto tree and they were used to build the exterior wall.
