In most families, there is often an heirloom or skill that is passed down from generations. While I never received a brooch or the ability to knit, I received the value of perseverance. It was passed down through the experiences that shaped my family and later shaped me. I see perseverance in my grandfather’s face as he struggles to live as an amputee, I hear it in my father’s voice as talks about the sacrifices he had to endure to receive an education. The act of persevering often creates a shift within a person, whether it's the realization in what really is important in life or a newfound strength. While many do not choose to be put in difficult situations, my parents chose to enter a difficult situation with the hopes that the outcome would not only benefit them, but their children as well. I often hear them, and people like them, being criticized for the act of coming to a new country, leaving behind everything they knew to pursue the American Dream. As a six-year-old, having to miss field trips to the zoo to attend tutoring and having to attend school during breaks to catch up to my classmates was exhausting both physically and mentally. Often my motivation was not completely educational, at times I simply just wanted to understand the television show everyone else enjoyed or the gossip between my friends. It was during art class, that I first began to comprehend what the teacher was talking about without the need for help. As she talked about the color wheel, I started to catch the words that she spoke. As I heard the words, “circle”, “red”, and “green” I realized that I understood what she was saying. I then realized that when I put the words together I could comprehend sentences she was speaking in order to explain the color wheel.
