Festivals were a very important part of life in ancient Greece, and were a central part of worshipping the gods. They honoured the gods through splendid spectacle and huge sacrifices. This would hopefully ensure help from the gods for the rest of the year. The festivals would usually included a procession and a sacrifice. For example even in times of great finical struggle, the Athenians still sacrificed 100 cows to Athena at the great Panathenaea. The sacrifice also played an important role as at the end of a sacrifice a great feast would follow offering the people of Athens, especially the poor a good feast and the rare chance to eat meat.
