Typically when we think of families, the traditional nuclear and extended family who are biologically related may come to mind. However, a family can be made up of anyone a person considers to be their family. A family shares emotional bonds, common values, goals and responsibilities. Family members contribute significantly to the wellbeing of each other. Confident children tend to come from strong, united families. Good communication within a family encourages feelings of self-worth and helps children maintain good relationships with others. A closeness with extended family members like aunts, uncles, cousins, and family or childhood friends helps give the child a sense of security and a source of love and acceptance. In Wordsworth’s poem, he describes how Michael’s son is ‘tainted’ by city life: “To slacken in his duty; and, at length, / He in the dissolute city gave himself / To evil courses: ignominy and shame” (443-445). At this moment, Wordsworth shows how when the ties with his family are weakened he gets in trouble and is forced overseas. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, innocence is destroyed by all that Victor does when he plays God and creates life. Most of the educators at Victor's school believe that he is involving himself in the unethical pursuits of "science." Victor pays no attention to the cautionary advice he is offered: he only listens to Waldman, the professor who tells Victor what he wants to hear. Victor discovers how to give life to the creature, he forgets everything else. Only when the creature wakes does Victor have regrets. He flees from the creature, which, like a newborn child, must try to survive in a world that shuns him because of how he looks. The monster is very lonely and meets Victor's younger brother, William. He believes a child would not have had the opportunity to hate that which looks unpleasant. However, William is frightened and threatens him: “Hideous monster! Let me go. My papa is a Syndic—he is M. Popular movies by Tyler Perry like Madea’s Family Reunion, Madea’s Big Happy Family, and I Can Do Bad All By Myself all stress the importance of relying on family. The Beautiful Creatures book series also has a strong point about family ties.
Both Shelley and Wordsworth use their works to describe the effects of family relationships as well as what happens when those relationships break or weaken. However, Frankenstein and “Michael” mostly focus on the things that happen when they are weakened. In “Michael” he lost his son and home, and in Frankenstein, victor got ill and he ultimately went down the wrong path and lost them. Values are mostly learned through family
