Benjamin Franklin is one of the most well-known founding father in the United States. His character, ingenuity, and determination have helped shape the country we live in today. Through his autobiography he discusses his upbringing and what factors lead him to be founding father we all know. The autobiography was written during three times; England in 1771, France 1783, and the Americas 1788. Unfortunately Franklin passed away before it was finished but what was done gives a great insight to the man who helped shaped a nation. We can see that in his writings he uses his morals to construct a picture of being a kindhearted, rational, caring founding father. Certain points in his book also show how he stuck to these morals and the things he left out in order to help solidify them. Franklin’s autobiography begins with his birth in Boston in 1706. Being the 15 of 17 children his father sent him to school to become minister. “Josiah intended for Benjamin to enter into the clergy. However, Josiah could only afford to send his son to school for one year and clergymen needed years of schooling. But, as young Benjamin loved to read he had him apprenticed to his brother James, who was a printer.” (Ushistory) During his apprenticeship with his brother, his fighting finally led him to quit his job and move to Philadelphia where he got a job working for Samuel Keimer. Later then goes to England, spending 18 months working for a printer. In 1726 his comes back to America and starts a debating club called Junto. In 1728 Ben takes control of the Pennsylvania Gzettette makes it profitable through the tools he learned in England. In 1730, Ben marries Deborah Reed and has two children with her. The autobiography stops for a bit and then begins ag... ... middle of paper ... ...en I would have thought. This could be due to the fact that many things we now know he was a part of was done in privacy and could have gotten him killed. It would be a very risky venture in writing about your plans to overthrow British rule during a time where it was not illegal for the British to just come in your home anytime they pleased. I do enjoy this book very much because of how self-promoted he was and feel a very strong connection in the personality he is said to have. Education and social progress is a strong issue I believe in and that fact that he built hospitals, universities, libraries, and investments in his own city show just how ahead of his time he was, although I feel he may cry over how many of our states and our government are run today. Ben Franklin once said “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
