The First World War was predominately fought in Central and Eastern Europe and it is one of the world’s first global scale conflicts. World War 1 started in 1914, went until 1918 and was said to be ‘The War to End All Wars’. The Australian experience of the war, including the nature and significance of the war has greatly impacted upon Australian history and culture. Annual events and allocated days are memorialised every year. These significant events are Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. ‘Since 1915, one day in the year has involved the whole of Australia in solemn ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride. That day is Anzac Day – April 25th‘(Anzac Day Commemoration Committee of Queensland, June 2000). Commemoration is the action or fact of honouring a dead person or past event. Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders "who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served” (Anzac Day, 2 June 2018). Commemoration is just one way to remember those who fought for Australia, most Australian’s take part in memorials of events held. These include services held by communities or marches that people might attend. Dawn services include certain speeches and composed music including the bag pipe to remember and give thanks and respect to the soldiers who have passed and who are still with us today. As well as the respectful one minute silence on Remembrance Day. It reminds them of those who fought for them and ultimately died for them. There is so much more to the Anzac Legend then all of the positivity and war the Anzac’s have won. Australians don’t weaken from the negative aspects or failures of the Anzac’s during and after war. ‘The reported achievements of the Anzacs were such that even failures in August and evacuation at the end of 1915 did not detract from the legend. In fact, the other part of the legend was born: Australians were brave but misused by incompetent British officers’ (Van Tol, D, 2012).
