Why I Want To Pursue My Degree In Biology Education

While completing my undergraduate class work, I was under the illusion I could graduate with my degree in biology and find a biology teaching position my first year teaching. This did not become a reality for me simply because a large amount of other qualified biology education majors had the exact same plan. Teaching 7th and 8th grade science was not my first choice for a teaching position until I started teaching at Dixon Middle School.

After teaching for three years at Dixon Middle School I found I have a passion for teaching middle school students. One of the reasons I enjoy teaching middle school students is for most of the students I teach, my class is their first experience in a science classroom. To successfully teach both 7th and 8th grade science you need to have background knowledge in chemistry, ecology, physics, cellular biology, anatomy, physiology, genetics, evolution, classification, and geology. While I feel very confident in teaching biological related standards, I would like to improve my level of understanding in physics, geology and chemistry.

After researching several graduate programs I became very excited after reading about the University of Utah’s MSSST program. Physics, geology and chemistry are three areas I would like to strengthen. I feel this program is what I am looking for to help improve the quality of teaching within my classroom, and increasing my personal level of understanding in physics, chemistry and geology. My short and long term goals I intend to accomplish in the MSSST program include the following:
