87 percent of high school teens are not getting the sleep that is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Because, school starts at an early time, the time for sleep is compressed to a point where their minds and bodies are not ready to be awake (Richter, Ruthann). Due to having cell phones teens are staying up later, after doing homework to check their social media account, talk to family members, and to catch up on the new they missed out on in school or while doing homework. With the academic stress that is put on to teenagers in this modern world that has so much to offer and not enough time to seek it all, many come home from various practices and jobs just to do four to five hours of homework from advanced classes or even extra work from level classes that are required in all schools. The school should reduce the amount of homework given every night …show more content…
Stage one is the lightest stage of the cycle, in this stage, people drift in and out of sleep and can be easily awakened. The second stage eye movement begins to stop and brain waves become slower with a small burst of brain waves every once and awhile. Stage three very slow delta waves are intersected with smaller shorter waves. With stage four the brain only produces delta waves. Stage three and four are deep sleep, in deep sleep, there is no eye movement or muscle activity. Lastly is REM sleep, which stands for rapid eye movement, in this stage people experience rapid, slow shallow breaths, eye jerking at a fast paced, and temporary paralysis. Also in this stage blood pressure rises, heart rate goes up and the body loses the ability to regulate temperature. During this time is when most dreams happen, if people awake during REM sleep they will most likely be able to remember these dreams. Adults spend half of sleep time in stage 2, about 20% in REM and the other 30% is divided between the other three stages (Stages of
Sleep! That wonderful, blissful void between last night and this morning. Sleep is one of the most basic functions of life. Nearly all creatures must sleep in order to properly carry out tasks; teenagers are no exception. The typical teenager needs an average of nine to ten hours of sleep a night in order for their brains to be capable of working at full capacity. School starts so early that they infringe upon that basic necessity. In order for teens to receive an adequate amount of sleep, it is mandatory to enact later start times for high schools across the country.
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
Why Schools Should Continue Starting at Eight Despite popular opinion, to be beneficial, schools should continue on their current schedules, and not start later. Starting schools later can have a variety of positive and negative consequences on students. Schools currently are at a time that gives students enough lesson time to learn subjects, but still have time to relax and take part in other activities after school. Many families depend on the time school starts to have easy transportation to school and work. Starting schools later will take away students time to do activities of their choice such as spend time with their families, socialize with others, and participate in extracurricular activities.
Were you aware that teens tend to have irregular sleeping patterns that can harm their body and the way it functions? When it comes to sleep, teens are inclined to stay up very late during the week and wake up very early in the morning. On the weekends, they seem to gravitate more towards waking up very late to catch up on the sleep that they missed earlier in the week. Now that you know what the causes of having irregular sleeping patterns can do to a teenager’s body, you will be able to see the positive and negative effects of what not having enough sleep can do to one’s self. These facts will be explored through the articles “Should Schools Start Later” by Justin O’Neill and “Why Schools Should Start Later in the Morning” by Emily Richmond.
High school classes should begin later in the day an end later in the day to accommodate students' natural sleep clocks. Class should start later, Look at how students react in the morning when teachers try to teach there first class at seven in the morning. Having class later will also help kids stay up and not go to sleep in class. First you never know what A student had to do the night before. One time i was doing a project and it was due the next day I stay up all night doing the project. the time i got done with it was four o'clock in the morning, and schools starts at seven there is no way any person can go off of two and a half hours of sleep and expect to be there and be 100 percent active. Therefore, Students do not work
Most high school teens and middle school teens don't get enough sleep, you are supposed to have 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night. Teachers and other educational people know this but they don't do anything to stop it. It is a scientific fact that teens learn more efficiently when they are well rested. Teenagers won't fall asleep later so they are continually losing sleep. There may be many causes why this is harmful in school relations but it is also dangerous in general, if students are too tired or over powered that can cause some dangerous side effects for example: getting in car accidents, alcohol, and cigarettes just so they can stay up longer.
Sleep is very important for us humans. Our body depends on sleep and rest. If we did not sleep, our body gets very tired and longs for sleep and rest. It's what resets us everyday so we can do the same things for the next day. But it can be challenging for some kids.
According to factslides.com,sleeping less than 7 hours each night reduces your life expectancy. Students are likely to receive better grades and test scores. Can improve students health and will reduce how much they fall asleep in class and complain about being tired. Middle Schools should start after 8:30 because of the positive impacts on students.
Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. Some kids cannot even make it to the dinner table because they have so much homework and that is not healthy for the parents and their childs relationship. In ...
Many parents and teachers want their kids to ameliorate their academic performance. There is a really simple solution, start school later. Studies show that the brain starts to work the best at 10:00 a.m. However, the average start time for schools across the United States is 8:03 a.m. Students do not listen and learn as good as they would if schools started later.
School starting later has it’s good and it’s bad but mostly its good. When school starts later than usual it’s an advantage. When you go to school early your body isn't functioning and you are not ready to learn until you're awake. The humans Teenagers’ bodies work like clocks They are set to a schedule that is different from that of younger children or adults Which means we just stay up later and wake up early for school.
School: the noun that fills many students' stomachs with dread as they think of having to retreat from summer and wake up so early again every morning. There are some students having to wake up as early as 5 a.m. to study or make it on the bus route. Recently, it has come into question whether school boards should push back starting times because of studies conducted by medical doctors and psychologists. In my opinion, schools should start back later because students, specifically middle school and high school, cannot handle the early starting times on top of everything else they have to deal with.
In stage 1 NREM sleep, a person starts to lose muscle tone and this is the reason for the sudden twitching and jerking of the body. A person also begins to lose self-awareness and will have hypnagogic hallucinations. Stage 2 NREM sleep is when a person’s muscle tone is almost all lost and sleep paralysis begins to take over the body. With Stage 3 NREM sleep, a person enters a stage where no dreaming occurs but where sleepwalking is possible. Stage 4 NREM sleep is the deepest form of sleep out of all of the four stages. REM sleep is the very last stage where your muscles begin to twitch and most of your dreams take place. (Turner, “Why Do We Sleep? Modern Theories of
Fifty six percent of students report being tired throughout the school day, which can lead to missed information and confusion (Wysong). According to this statistic, over half the students in class are not going to achieve their maximum learning potential in school. In order to avoid this problem, a teenager's brain typically needs to sleep from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am (“High schools starting later to help sleepy teens”). However, most high schools require students to be in class as early as 7:15 or 7:30 am. As a result, many adolescents simply do not have the opportunity to get enough rest. Changing the traditional school time to start later in the day will benefit adolescent sleep cycles, promote learning, and prevent disease by regulating the body. Ideally,...
The four stages of sleep are REM (rapid eye movement sleep), NREM1 (non-rem), NREM2, and NREM3. During the REM stage “your heart rate rises, your breathing becomes rapid and irregular, and every half-minute or so your eyes dart around in momentary burst of activity behind closed lids” (Myers, 2014, p. 96).
