The Significance of Scrutinized History

Reconciliation and celebrating Canada's history is significant not only to future generations in Canada but to our current generation as well. Canada has been colonized for 150 years since its history that has begun from 1867. Canada’s history guides us with the understanding of diversity that created the society we live in right now. July 1st, 2017 is the day where we celebrate the 150th birthday of Canada. In honour to this country that is the home to us, we wear red and white colours to show our identification as a Canadians. Paradoxically, some Indigenous which are one of Canada’s first people protested that the sesquicentennial events are not essential to celebrate this significant day. “We don’t always share the prosperity and blessings of Canada.” In my opinion, I think that Canada’s 150 should be celebrated and to be proud of because it is a day to remember and embrace Canada’s past. We celebrate Canada Day because it is a dominion holiday where it is our right to express our gratitude to our home. Since colonization, Canada has experienced many events such as racism, slavery, Vancouver earthquake, the Alberta Tar Sand and most recently, global warming has been melting down ice caps where artix animals will lose their habitat. On Canada’s anniversary, we should come together to support the negative events this country has gone through as well as to celebrate all the happy times that we have spent together. Canadian identity means to have the role of recognizing the cultural diversity and human rights as well as the acknowledgement of symbolism.
