Proud To Be Canadian
Today, Canada is among the most free and secure countries in the world. Although Canada has gone through some rough patches, like every country is bound to do, it is safe to say that all Canadians should be proud of the country that Canada is today. When faced with the question, “Is Canada a country to be proud of?”, the answer is simple, yes. The justification for this response is explained through many reasons, however a few stand out. These outstanding reasons are, one being Canada’s participation in peacekeeping missions, another being the Canadian charter of human rights, and lastly Canada’s participation in war. This is once again a large contributor to why Canadians should be proud of Canada, one point that proves that the Canadian charter of human rights contributes toward this is the fact that the rights allow freedom. The charter of rights states, “Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:(a) freedom of conscience and religion; (b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; (c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and d) freedom of association.” This specific right allows Canadians to do many things like allowing them to express themselves freely. The next reason that proves that the Canadian charter of rights is something Canadians should be proud is the fact that the rights allow right justice to all Canadians. It is stated right in the charter of rights that, “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” For Canadians to be guaranteed the right to justice is something that should be basic rights for all humans, however not all are that lucky and for that reason Canadians should be proud of this. The first point that proves this is how Canada participated in World War I for the bettering of the world. On August 19th, 1914 Sir Robert Borden made a speech officially confirming Canada’s entering into war, however he did not want people to think Canada was going into war for the wrong reasons, so he stated, “Not for love of battle, not for lust of conquest, not for greed of possessions, but for the cause of honour, to maintain solemn pledges, to uphold principles of liberty, to withstand forces that would convert the world into an armed camp; yea, in the very name of the peace that we sought at any cost save that of dishonour, we have entered into this war;”. Sir Borden really makes it clear that Canada was entering war to maintain promises and for peace, these are all the right reasons to enter into war, and Canadians should be proud of this. The second point that shows why Canada’s participation in the two world wars is something to be proud of, is how Canada provided valiant efforts. Canada was a very small country at the time of World War I but still provided so many men and resources to the alliance, “Over the course of the war, more than 1.1 million Canadians served in the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, and in forces across the Commonwealth. Many people claim to this day that Canada came of age as a country on those hard April days in 1917. At first, through the meticulous planning of the battle, the world saw a nation capable of working together and making decisions as a team. Afterwards, with the range of technical and tactical innovations involved in the attack, the world saw a strong nation unafraid to protect and defend. In the end, through great sacrifice the world bore witness to the birth of the Canadian legacy.
One of Canada’s largest military endeavors was the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War One. It was a fierce battle between Germans and Canadians. Canada was trying to take over the German controlled ridge, which ran from northwest to southwest between Lens and Arras, France. Its highest point was 145 feet above sea level, which was exceptionally helpful in battle because of the very flat landscape. Already over 200,000 men had fallen at Vimy, all desperately trying to take or defend this important and strategic ridge. As a result of its success in taking the ridge, Canada gained a lot more than just the strategic point. Canada was united as a nation, and the victory changed the way other counties viewed them. Canadians no longer viewed their soldiers as merely an extension of allied forces; they now viewed their troops as an independent and unified entity.
Approximately 620,000 Canadians fought during the First World War. Nearly 700,000 if we account for the men and women that enlisted in the Canadian units outside of the Canadian Expeditionary Force and in the British forces. Of which, almost 173,000 Canadians were wounded and about 67,000 Canadians had lost their lives by November 11th, 1918. These casualties were devastating in numbers. Apart from the other laws in Canada’s constitution, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is an important law that affects every Canadian’s rights and freedoms. It was created in 1981 by former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to provide legal protection for the most important rights and freedoms. These rights include fundamental freedoms, democratic rights, mobility rights, and legal rights. Most but not all articles included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are protected in the constitution. However, if a Canadian feels that their rights are violated, they can challenge laws and unfair actions using the justice system. In my opinion, I believe the Canadian Charter of Human Rights somewhat protects Canadians’ rights and freedoms to some extent depending on the situation.

This line was said after the end of World War I, where nations met up to discuss the Treaty of Versailles or the treaty to end World War I. Many people across the globe argue that nationalism within Canada is simply not feasible. It is said that we as a people, differ so greatly with our diverse cultures, religions, and backgrounds that we cannot come together and exist together as a strong, united nation. In his book, Lament for a Nation, George Grant tells the reader that “…as Canadians we attempted a ridiculous task in trying to build a conservative nation in the age of progress, on a continent we share with the most dynamic nation on earth. The current history is against us.” (1965) Originally directed towards the Bomarc Missile Crisis, the book argues that whatever nationalism Canada had was destroyed by globalization as well as the powerful American sphere of influence. Although it is true that the book was initially written as a response to the events that took place in the late 1950s, many of the points are still valid today.
One would have to admit that World War One did give Canada a reputation and Canadians pride. Their courage made there fighting 100% stronger as they wouldn’t back down to any task and they weren’t afraid to lose their life to help a fellow friend and country out.
