Darsh Patel Mrs. Pinkler English 121-RALP October 22, 2014 Are professional athletes overpaid? Dear Barbara A. Mikulski, Is America in trouble? From how they are spending their money, I would certainly say so. The Money in the United States is being used improperly and wasted on players prance around on a field for 90 minutes while the money could go to other citizens who are working hard to save lives, getting the United States out of debt or even helping to end homelessness in this country. Professional athletes make a significant amount of money for doing not a lot. I agree that they work hard and train endless hours but not enough to be making millions and millions of dollars. The ethical part is about being able to help someone who is in need, and not doing so, and the global part is about the effects of over paying athletes in the United States has on other countries. People can say it's unethical for a player that spends say $20,000 on just buying himself shoes when there are hungry and homeless families in many parts of the united states who can have a meal for $2. Lee Kravitz brought up a great issue, in his article Hunger at home: a call for help; poverty and hunger are not just foreign problems, of how there are millions of Americans who go to sleep hunger and have not had a meal in weeks. "According to a 10-month study by a panel of doctors sponsored by Harvard University, "hunger is a national health epidemic' that afflicts much of U.S. society. "It is our judgment,' the group said last year, "that hunger in the United States is now more widespread and serious than at any time in the last 10 to 15 years'". This implies that there need to be an immediate action taken towards preventing the hunger epidemic in the United States. It is very clear and straight forward, yet people and the government have over looked it. We live in the United States together which means we all suffer together.
