Freshmen seminar revolves around the concept of finding our purpose in life. In seminar the focus was to reflect upon our past, present, and future to be able to understand ourselves better as well as to discover what direction we are heading. Everyone’s values shape a person into who they will be. Through discussion and course materials we were able to examine and answer the question (Who am I? How did I become who I am? Who will I be in the world?) for our seminar class. In class we examined Living Buddha, Living Christ, The Poisonwood Bible, Martin Luther King Jr. speech, and the movie Promised Land, and more. Through the discussions we held in class on the materials viewed we were able get to know everyone as individuals making a statement in the world. Classmates were stating their own opinions and experiences, making us as a class see how every one of us is unique with planned aspirations to achieve. The course materials analyzed rose important factors to consider when making choices about who we will be in the world, such as education, passion, mindfulness, inspirations/influences, and dreams. Through education, so many doors open for us to become leaders in the world. Education does not necessarily have to be through schooling, it can also be a form experience. As humans, we learn on a daily basis, everything that we comprehend we are able to use to make the best out of it. Education is a huge factor to consider when making a choice in my own life. I aspire to be a pediatrician someday. In order for me to reach my goal, education is a big obstacle to overcome. Many dedicated focused years are needed as well as a plan for paying off loans. You truly need to know that you want it, and go for it. Do not give up on your dreams because they are your goals. Looking into your dreams is the best way to find out what you want from life. Thinking about whom you will be in the world is a difficult thing, because who knows how your life will unfold, but having the right mindset on what you want to accomplish will help ballpoint where you want to be in the future. Gary Ryan Blair, the author of The Goals Guy said, “Do more than is required. What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following? The extra mile.” (). By having important factors to rely on when making big decisions about your future can help you with the process of discovering who you were, are and want to be.
