Commonly known to anthropologists around the world, the Piltdown Hoax was one of the greatest and most successful hoaxes in history. Even thought the scientific fraud had occurred over one hundred years ago, the forgery still draws attention because it has never been satisfactorily resolved. Though the main culprit appears to have been identified, Charles Dawson, the remaining doubt and suspicion around the event have not been confirmed or denied. Who was involved in the hoax? What evidence is there to prove it? Questions like these and many more have yet to be answered and are still under investigation.

The two men thought of the event as a forgery from early on. With the doubt Oakley had, he performed a chemical analyses on the bone fragments and exposed the whole fraud, showing that not a single bone from Piltdown discovered was authentic. It was discovered that the jaw bone found was actually from a sub-fossil orangutan and the skull discovered was from a modern human who had a thick skull, thought to be from an Australian aborigine. Most of the blame is put on Dawson since he was the person who discovered the Piltdown skull first and many other Piltdown fossils after the first discovery. A key point that points to him being the main suspect is the fact that no other evidence of the Piltdown Man was discovered after Charles Dawson’s death. Whether he was working alone or with accomplices is something still debated to this day. The three main accomplices believed to have worked with Dawson were Author Smith Woodward, Author Keithe and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Keithe and Woodward were the two main scientists who reconstructed the Piltdown Man and Teilhard worked with Dawson while he made the Piltdown discoveries.
Another question that arises regarding this is why was the public and the English scientists so willing to accept this discovery for so long? Some believe it is because the Europeans were so willing to accept the fact that their land was the origin of humankind. They did not like having another country possessing the origin of humankind and because they found this, it gave them a reason to believe that their land, in fact, was where humans originated. Though there was little evidence to prove this, the Europeans did not need it to believe the Piltdown
