Heike Kamerlingh Onnes was studying superconductivity. Onnes was researching the properties of matter, but not in the normal state. He had the temperatures extremely low and he observed the properties of matter. At the end of his investigation, his result were remarkable he created liquid helium… he then received a nobel for his great discovery. In 1911, Ernest Rutherford found a very spectacular in such a small thing. Rutherford found that an atom has a microscopic charged nucleus. Empty space surrounds the nucleus. The nucleus is also surrounded by electrons. By this discovery Rutherford made the model of the atom. Germany 1912, scientist Alfred Wegener Had thought about a theory that could have changed the world. Wegener had the idea of Plate tectonic and the Continental drift. When the idea was first presented, people thought he was out of his mind. He was criticized for what he thought. Soon after him releasing his idea, it was accepted. Wegener then started to understand the earth and the theory of pangea.
Herbert Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa, and was the first president born west of the Mississippi River. When the election of 1932 came around, Hoover blamed the depression on factors beyond his control, but the public either didn’t care or wasn’t buying it, and Franklin Roosevelt won the election. J.J. Thompson didn’t really believe that the atom was the smallest piece to matter. So he did some experiments with running current through a glass tube with the air sucked out of it. That’s what a cathode ray tube is. It has a negative charge attached to the cathode (the metal piece farthest to the side of the tube) and the positive charge attached to the anode (the metal piece closer to the center of the tube). After running current through the cathode he realized that a stream of light was projected from the end that was being charged to the opposite and showing at the inside of the tube. He wasn’t very sure what it meant at first but then he figured it out.
Teddy Roosevelt had served from 1901-1908 in one term because he was brought in during McKinley’s presidency due to him getting killed. This meant that he could serve another term which would total him at 11 years in office. However, Teddy decided that it would be best if he just called it quits there and got out of office after 7 years which he would count as two terms. A mention of the name, Roosevelt D. Franklin to most Americans, rekindles the memories of the Second World War, the Manhattan projects and the subsequent bombing of two Japanese cities. What most of these people fail to understand is that Roosevelt's presidency was the Second World War. Turth be told, Roosevelt is one the greatest presidents the United States ever had based on his personality and the challenges he faced while in the White House. This paper discusses a number of aspects about one of the United States' celebrated presidents, Foosevelt D. Franklin, including his life history, challenges he faced, his achievements, as well as, some unique things about him and his presidency.
Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York City, New York. He was the second of four children and showed at an early age an aptitude for leadership. When Roosevelt was 18 he entered Harvard University and graduated there in 1880 at the age of 22. He married Alice Hathaway Lee in 1880 and they had one child named Alice. Sadly though Alice died giving birth to their daughter. By 1881 Roosevelt was winning appointments to the New York State assembly. Roosevelt remarried in 1886 to Edith Kermit Carow and had five children with her. In 1895 Roosevelt was made Assistant Secretary of the Navy. When the Spanish-American broke out Roosevelt quickly resigned his post and formed a cavalry regiment he named the roughriders. During the war the roughriders lead a charge that captured vital San Juan Hill. After the war he became Governor of New York and later the vice-president under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated on September 6th, 1901 Roosevelt was sworn in as President.
Theodore Roosevelt was a strong leader and ruled with an iron fist as a president. He conquered the frontier and went on to conquer other countries as well. Roosevelt was a born leader. During his childhood he overcame his sickness by exercising and participating in outdoor activities. After Theodore graduated from Harvard he went straight into politics. He began his career as the president of the New York Board of Police Commissioners. Later Roosevelt continued his career as an assistant secretary of the navy in Washington. He then became a Rough Rider during the Spanish-American War. Roosevelt then returned home and became the Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States in 1900. In 1901 he became President when William McKinley was assassinated. William Taft took his place in 1908.
Woodrow Wilson, Born in Virginia in 1856 and raised in Georgia and South Carolina, was the 28th president of the United States. He enacted significant reform legislation during his two terms. Surprisingly, he was a political novice who had held only one public office before becoming president, but fortunately enough possessed considerable political skill. He was a brilliant and effective public speaker, but he found it difficult to work well with other government officials because he did not deal well with disagreements. Wilson developed a program of progressive reform and asserted international leadership in building a new world order. In 1917 he proclaimed American entrance into World War I a crusade to make the world "safe for democracy" (similar to George W. Bush, who has used this phrase in his war against terrorism).
Another important individual who drove history was the Italian astronomer and scientist Galileo Galilei. Galileo discovered something so important that it changed the selfish perspective that humans were the center of the universe and led to the growth of human knowledge. Utilizing mathematics and a telescope he had developed, Galileo observed that the planets revolved around the sun and not the Earth. This was a significant discovery because not only did it contradict what the church had taught, it also showed that the universe was not what it seemed. With this truth uncovered, many people began to fascinate over the universe. This triggered people to begin studying space extensively and eventually lead to present day space exploration. Galileo also left a lasting impression upon many great minds, such as Sir Isaac Newton, who used Galileo's research and theories to further his own studies such as the physical laws, and their properties.
In the beginning of the 1800s John Dalton, an English scientist did work some work on gases, which lead him to the creation of a complex system of symbols for all known elements at the time. He took all the information he had collected, along with the Laws of Conservation of Mass, Definite Composition and Multiple Proportions and updated Aristotle's theory of matter with the Atomic Theory of Matter, which stated: - All matter is composed of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms. - Atoms of an element have identical properties. - Atoms of different elements have different properties. - Atoms of two or more elements can combine in constant ratios to form new substances. In the late 1800s a man named J. J. Thomson did some experiments, who's results did not agree with Dalton's Atomic Theory. Thomson passed electricity though gases, my his experiments, he theorized the existence negatively charged subatomic particles he called electrons. From this theory Thomson created a model of a atom which had the electrons placed evenly inside the atoms. In the early 1900s a Japanese scientist named H. Nagaoka designed an atom model as a large sphere surrounded by a ring of negatively charged electrons. Also, during the early 1900s (1898-1907) a physicist named Ernest Rutherford worked on experiments to test current atom models. His experiments involved shooting rays of alpha particles (small positively charged particles) though very thin pieces of gold foil. Based on Thomson's model, Rutherford hypothesized that the alpha particles would travel through the gold foil mostly unaffected by the gold. He was right. Most of the particles did pass through, but a small amount of particles were deflected. From this Rutherford hypothesized that the atoms must have a small positively charged core, the nucleus, which is surrounded by mainly empty space, which contains the electrons. In 1914 Rutherford made up the word "proton," which were subatomic particles that had a positive charge. A student of Rutherford's, a man named H. G. J. Moseley was the one who gathered the empirical support for Rutherford's work. In his experiments he used X-rays to show that the positive charge in the nucleus grows by one, from each element to the other. From this Moseley devised the concept of Atomic Number. In 1932, James Chadwick established that the nucleus must contain heavy neutral particles as well as positive ones, this was to explain the entire mass of the atom.
The revolution brought about many radical changes and ideas that helped to strengthen it and the scientists that helped to bring it about became significant persons in history. "The emergence of a scientific community is one of the distinguishing marks of the Scientific Revolution."2 It was this form of community that gave a foundation for open thinking and observing throughout the sixteenth century and through twenty-first century. It was the first revolution that had more of a dedication to the ongoing process of science than of a goal to achieve scientific knowledge.3

Of all the scientists to emerge from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries there is one whose name is known by almost all living people. While most of these do not understand this mans work, everyone knows that his impact on the world is astonishing.
From this simple observation, Rutherford concluded that the atom's mass must be concentrated in a small positively-charged nucleus while the electrons inhabit the farthest reaches of the atom. Although this planetary model of the atom has been greatly refined over the years, it remains as valid today as when it was originally formulated by Rutherford. Science affects the world in many different ways. With the technologies that have been discovered we can now tell how warm or cold it will be for the next week, we will know when a tornado, hurricane, eruption or any other sorts of natural disasters will occur before they actually happen. This also helps out all communities. My family loves to travel, and if airplanes weren’t invented we wouldn’t be able to go to many places. We also need microwaves, stoves and ovens in order for us to eat supper, and fridges and freezers for us to keep our food in. We also enjoy watching television and movies, and I love talking on the telephone and listening to music. Without science none of these things would be possible.
