In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, the ideas of being a man are mentioned throughout the historical fiction novel. Okonkwo, the main character, is very serious about being a man. It is very important in the Ibo culture, where Okonkwo is from to be manly. He does not view his late father as being manly, so Okonkwo wants to be everything his father is not. Sometimes, Okonkwo’s obsession with manliness do more harm than good. Okonkwo is manly because he cares and protects his family, and he is physically strong. On the other hand, Okonkwo is not manly because he is not mentally strong. Okonkwo is manly because he cares and protects his family. Gilmore states: “A real man is one who provides for his family, protects dependents, and produces babies.” (3) A way he cares for his family, is by being a good provider for them. “Okonkwo did not have the start in life which many young men usually had” (Achebe, 16). Okonkwo’s father, Unoka, is not the best father to Okonkwo, and leaves him nothing to start his own farm with. This is because Unoka is in a lot of debt, and when he dies, there is nothing for him to give to Okonkwo. Because of this, Okonkwo does not see his father as being manly, and want to be everything his father is not. Okonkwo gets his crops through sharecropping, which means he borrows some seeds from someone else, and when the crops are harvested, he gives most of the harvest back. It is a slow process to start a farm, but it is necessary for Okonkwo. In the end, Okonkwo has a large and prosperous farm. Another way Okonkwo cares for his family, is by being protective of them.
