In “The Story of an Hour” , Kate Chopin portrays Mrs. Mallard as a victim of oppression during the late 1800’s. The author portrays Mrs Mallard as a woman that had just received the news that her husband had died. When she is given the news that her husband had passed away, she does not react like a typical person would after a loved one had passed away. It is not stated in the story that Mallard was a victim of oppression in her matrimony, but it is noticeable from the hints the author gives from Mrs. Mallard's questionable actions.

An example would be when she whispered the words “free, free, free”. This means that she realized her new freedom after her husband's death. This does not mean she did not love him, instead she love him sometimes. The words free came as an impulse because of how orverwellmend and happy she was feeling in the moment. She finally saw hope of a better life free of oppression where she can make her own decisions. This action also implies she felt relief from the oppression of her husband and now she has control over her life and can have individuality. The story also says “But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely.” this implies that after her husband's death she would feel free to live her life how she wants it . …show more content…

Mallard says ,“There would be no one to live for during these coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature”. We can imply that Mrs. Mallard is imagining a life without her husband. Where she has individuality and control over her life decisions. You can conclude that in her marriage her husband has full control over her and she has little freedom. She was formulating a life without him which seemed happier and
