Shakespeare’s Juliet Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is very valuable in today’s culture. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet many people believe that Romeo is the star of the play, but in many ways, it is in fact Juliet; she speaks for herself, understands the consequences to her own actions, and is extremely intelligent given her age. To begin, Juliet speaks for herself. One example of this is when she had told her parents that she did not wish to marry Paris. This is showing that she is willing to speak out to her parents and tell them exactly what she wants. One reason that Juliet is intelligent is because she initiates and controls her own actions. An example of this is when she and the friar had come up with an idea to get her out of Verona and back to Romeo. During this scene Juliet questions whether or not she should take the sleeping potion, but after some thinking, she decided to drink it. Later on in the play you can see that the plan had in fact failed, and both Romeo and Juliet had passed away, but in drinking that potion Juliet had decided that in taking that potion she would get to be with Romeo forever. This is showing that Juliet had made a major decision on what she wants to do with her life and where she plans on going. Another example of her intelligence is when the nurse is making sexual jokes about Juliet and Juliet replies with, “And stint thou, too, I pray thee, nurse, say I”(I.ii).
