In Joseph Conrad's book, Heart of Darkness, he portrays Africa as dark and uncivilized. Because of Joseph Conrad's upbringing in conservative 17th century Europe, his portrayal of Africans was negative whereas, Chinua Achebe's identity as an African 20th century author shined a radical positive light on the African stereotype. Joseph Conrad stifled the African struggle by portraying Africans as a stereotype and only including them as flat characters. Where as Achebe wanted to give a voice to the previously misunderstood African culture, by portraying the main character Okonkwo as a vivid round leader. Each story was written to teach the reader about the hardships of colonization. Both however, have contrasting point of views.

Since he grew up in Nigeria, Achebe had a solid understanding of his own heritage and history. Although he attended school in London, that didn't make his proud African roots fade. Being an educated man, Achebe read several books about the hardships of colonization, in all books there was a common similarity; the portrayal of the Africans was flawed. In all the books the Africans were written off as animals and savages. Achebe wanted to change the poor representation of Africans during colonization. His goal was to change the misleading stereotype that the authors who came before him once made. Achebe once said, "See other human beings as human beings." His fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten." Achebe writes Okonkwo's character as if he is a hero to his village.
