“Where is it Written” by Adam Schwartz, is a story about love and heartache with Sandra trying to get custody of her son, Sam. Sam first was living with her mother with some issues like, arguing and disrespect. Then Sandra starts trying to be nice to Sam so he can stay with her. Finally, Sam ends up with his father. Coming of age is an important theme, in which it shows that an individual is coming to adulthood and takes responsibility and a deeper understanding of one's consequences. Sam came of age because he realizes his mother just really wants her son in her life. He also realized that you can’t change someone’s opinion when in their heart of hearts they know they are right. Sam’s mother is described as a sympathetic character when she goes to Florida. In Florida, Sam’s grandfather treats Sandra like he is embarrassed that she is his child. This is important because the reader is supposed to feel sympathetic towards her because the grandfather seems to think that Sandra is a failure, due to Sandra having a divorce and not being able to keep a man. Another scene in which Sandra is depicted in a sympathetic way is when Sam describes the escape from the dental chair. He wanted to get the towel out from her neck and get Sandra off of that chair and tell her to run and Sam will meet her at the airport. But his imagination got the better of him. Again, the reader is supposed to feel sympathetic towards Sandra because when he said that he is relieved that Rose, Sandra’s mother is not here to see what Sandra has become, you feel a sense of sadness for her because her eyes start to water. Grandfather sees that and asks if she wants novocain. As the reader, the word pain may seem to have a double entendre attached to it. Finally, Sam appears to have mixed feelings towards Sandra because he sees Sandra in a vulnerable state, and feels a bit of empathy because of the way Sandra is being degraded by her father. These different moments in which Sandra is described as a sympathetic character are important in Sam’s coming of age because he realizes a feeling caring for someone, like a parent to a child.
