Immigrants played leading roles in the Civil War and the reconstruction of the South. Apart from slavery, few issues were as important in Civil War America as immigrants and immigration policy. Despite all the prejudice and violence, immigration was a big part of Americas history and the US had millions of them, with most of them settling in the North and the West where jobs and land were cheaper and abundant.
