Metropolis by Fritz Lang a German expressionist silent movie one of the first science fiction movies. Most well-known film for criticizing society. It was set in a futuristic dystopia and shows a separation. Perfect world but then find out an underworld. Two worlds supposedly the top is perfect but then discover an underworld. All the workers and lower class live there. Freder and daughter of worker fall in love and discover origin. Crossing worlds happens through their love. Son was caught in the worker area. Editing and camera work show distorted scene of German expressionism. Wide shot showing workers working and how they are enclosed by the bars. Very weird cuts and distorted pics. Cello and violin building up and down based on actions. Changing to sad and slow when poor kids arrive. Music changes based on the mood gets faster to build up suspense and excitement. Music throughout the movie building up and down and is constantly changing replacing the use of words. When words really are needed they are written for the viewer to read and interpret. All the sound track replaces the words and is very effective. One can see this movie as art brought into life with no dialogues and faces with exaggerated makeup. We follow actions through Point of view of Workers who were next to machines with no freedom as if they are machines. We see how in the underworld the humans are machines physically while in the pretty world they are mentally robots that are brainwashed in the dystopia. Temperature reached max and exploded like society. Important and high rank people walk through big doors. They are important and have big egos so pass through big doors.
