I. MY QUESTION
To what extent do parents influence their child and do parent-child relationship always have to have a negative image, have to involve a tyrannical parental figure, and have to create a burden to the child? I already knew, that most of the time, the influence of parents on the children depends on how devoted the parent is to their child. The reason why I chose this question is because throughout the novels we read in class, I realized there are many scenes where the main character is often affected by their parent and also how their parent’s influence the main character’s personality. My curiosity of why parents have such an impact on their child led me to research this question and also how it can also be applied to my personal

Throughout the novel, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, Luo and the narrator are often given obstacles in their daily lives due to their parent’s circumstances. Luo’s father is a famous dentist who worked on Chairman Mao’s teeth and the narrator’s parents are doctors. Due to their parent’s status as a medical professional, the boys were sent to the rural side for re-education during the Cultural Revolution. During this time, Luo’s father ran into a particular legal trouble after telling his students that he worked on Mao’s teeth. This was considered a serious crime since suggesting that Mao needed dental work was not allowed in the society during the Cultural Revolution. He was then publicly humiliated and this gave Luo the image of “son of a perpetrator”. Later in the novel, the narrator attempts to help out to Little Seamstress as she discovers she is pregnant. This situation is devastating because abortion is illegal. The narrator goes to the Yong Jing Hospital and asks for help. However, the gynecologist recognizes his father’s name and realizes that he does not have a daughter. In this case, if his parents weren’t doctors, it would have been possible for the narrator to help the Little Seamstress get an abortion without trouble. Throughout their early life, children feel oppressed by their parents. From being constantly nagged to being misunderstood, children can feel that their parents dislike them. With screams and threats, with lions lurking, Ray Bradbury utilizes foreshadowing and symbolism to uncover those dark feelings that dwell within a child.
In the novels, Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, there are similar conflicts between the parental figure of a main character and the main character. Both conflicts in the novels stem from the parental figure not having control and authority over their family and forcing their beliefs onto those they are raising.
The chapter “A Fathers Influence” is constructed with several techniques including selection of detail, choice of language, characterization, structure and writers point of view to reveal Blackburn’s values of social acceptance, parenting, family love, and a father’s influence. Consequently revealing her attitude that a child’s upbringing and there parents influence alter the characterization of a child significantly.
There are many things that most people take for granted. Things people do regularly, daily and even expect to do in the future. These things include eating meals regularly, having a choice in schooling, reading, choice of job and a future, and many more things. But what if these were taken away and someone told you want to eat, where and when to work, what you can read, and dictated your future. Many of these things happened in some degree or another during the Chinese Culture Revolution under Mao Zedong that began near the end of the 1960’s. This paper examines the novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie and a book by Michael Schoenhals titled China’s Culture Revolution, 1966-1969. It compares the way the Chinese Cultural Revolution is presented in both books by looking at the way that people were re-educated and moved to away, what people were able to learn, and the environment that people lived in during this period of time in China.

The movie begins with the family and parenting styles concept of child development by introducing the audience to the main character James and his parents. James lives in a two-parent household with his authoritative parents who are providing him with warmth, love, and encouragement (Levine & Munsch, pp. 521-522). This concept of parenting styles is shown as the movie begins and James is seen spending time with his parents. Then suddenly, James’ world changes and he is abandoned as a result of his parents being killed. This causes James to become orphaned and forced to live with his authoritarian aunts, Spiker and Sponge. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are very controlling towards James and expect him to obey their rules without allowing him to express his feelings. This authoritarian behavior is seen throughout the movie. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are also uninvolved, neglectful, and abusive, using verbal and physical punishment on James when they feel it’s necessary, which is also seen throughout the movie (Levine & Munsch, p. 522). These behaviors cause James to develop lower self-esteem, show less intellectual curiosity, and feel lonely and afraid, which are typical outcomes of an authoritarian parenting approach (Levine & Munsch, pp. 521-523). In my opinion, parents are the result of a young person’s actions. Parents or caregivers have the biggest influence in their children's lives. I think that the way you raise your children will reflect who they become and their morals. Growing up, a child learns by copying what their parents do for example for me, I got the habit of biting my nails from my mother. Cooking, cleaning, driving, are taught to us by our parents, therefore; children learn to carry on those skills they learn and use them in the future.

Having a baby can be stressful, especially being that the village was not doing so great. The baby could have brought guilt, anger, depression, and loneliness to the aunt, family, and village lifestyle because having a baby from someone other than your husband was a disgrace to the village, based on the orientalism of women. Society expected the women to do certain things in the village and to behave a particular way. The author suggests that if her aunt got raped and the rapist was not different from her husband by exploiting "The other man was not, after all, much different from her husband. Matter of fact, a huge debate went over this particular issue, whether strict parenting is the right method, or being leant is the correct method. "There is clear evidence that parents can and do influence children." (Maccoby 1). Although, there are numerous factors that can affect the parenting process, or affect the way the parents treat the child (Bossard 333) (Maccoby 1). For instance, different home circumstances... the divided home, or the neglectful home, or the mother-controlled home, or may be the overly demanding home, or the home with too many bosses, so all these different home atmospheres are major factors that affect the development of any child (Bossard 333). In addition, the parents’ attitude towards the child is mostly effective in the formation of the child's personality (Bossard 334). Furthermore, the genetic effect of the child is very important, researches proved that genes are one of the most effective factors in the parenting process, and genes affect the child's own behavior characteristics, and also influences the way the parents are tending to treat their son/daughter (Maccoby 5). I will explain the three major parenting styles and will prove that it is not possible to assume that there is one best style to follow, because each home or family have their own special cases or circumstances that will affect the parenting process
