Analytical Journal While reading through Book the First and Book the Second, I realized I had many discussion questions relating to the themes and issues in the first few chapters. Mostly portraying to the concepts I didn’t quite understand. Throughout the first few chapters, the theme I noticed that was most prevalent was suffering and how the civilians during this time suffered heavily. There were enough examples in this section of reading to make this assumption, but I still believe the more I read, the more themes that will be revealed. In chapter 1, page 41, Mr. Cruncher is seen yelling at his wife for supposably praying against him. “I was only saying my prayers.” “Saying your prayer? Your a nice woman! Most of the imagery described the terrible conditions of the people during this time. The main form of imagery I found that really showcased the terrible outlooks for these people was one used to describe wine as blood. In chapter 5, page 22, Dickens writes “The time was to come, when that wine too would be spilled on the street stones, and when the stain of it would be red upon many there.. The darkness of it was heavy- cold, dirt, sickness, ignorance, and want.” (Dickens, 22) This quotation summarizes the events that are too come. That soon, the wine- which is really the blood- will be spilled and people will start to die at an alarming rate because of this famine and true ignorance. When it talks about the description of Saint Antoine, it mentions sickness and want, like the people will never receive any of their desires and either will die from sickness or famine. “He’ll be drawn on a hurdle to be half hanged, and then he’ll be taken down and sliced before his own face, and then his inside will be taken out and burnt while he looks on, and then his head will be chopped off.. That’s his sentence.” (Dickens, 45) This particularly gory description showcases the effects of what happens to these people if there were to break the law for any reason whether minor or a criminal offense. I think this description shows imagery very well because it was so heavily described and detailed. I was able to feel for the person that may receive that sentence and all in all made me aware of the frightfulness of the
