Sociology describes many types of social groups, and each group is viewed differently. The first group is a primary group member that has a personal relationship with each other or face-to-face interaction. Secondary groups are the complete opposite of primary groups because they involve little to no knowledge of each other. Secondary groups also tend to have an impersonal relationship. In-group are what society use to help identify themselves. The out-groups are more of a minority in society, which are people who are different and don’t have the same interests as the in-groups. All of the social groups have a distinction between one another.

Secondary groups sometimes don’t need to have face-to-face interaction because of social network, which are held together by ties. As stated by Charles Horton Cooley, “secondary groups are groups marked by impersonal, instrumental relationships, those existing as a means to an end” (Cooley 159). Secondary groups are larger than primary groups because secondary groups are people that do not have a personal relationship, and their involvement is temporary. If I have already viewed the world in a positive or negative way, how can in-groups influence my views of the world. In-group sees the world the same way I do, because members of the in-group attracts others like themselves. In my opinion, I do believe out-groups have affected my views and the reason why is, in society I am categorized as an out-group. In some way it has affected my views, but it also made me aware of out-group. In-groups have enormous political and economic power; they are also the most often the majority in society. Despite the greater numbers that out-groups have, they still do not have power.
Reflection
After reading and writing about the terms of social groups, I have learned a lot about what can change are views. I realized how important primary group are in life and the secondary groups are individual without any emotional connection. Even though secondary group members do not have a personal relationship they still play a role in society, whether if it’s for a long or short period of time. I didn’t really learn to much about the in-groups and out-groups from a sociology stand point. I think it should of cover more detail in the book and it gave little to no context of the
