While living in the secret annex, the Franks and the van Daans faced many strict rules to ensure their safety. The annex residents imposed the rules of no talking during the day, no walking during the daytime, and no outdoor activities or exit outside of their hiding area. The rule of no talking and no walking around during the daytime was put in place so the members of the annex would not be discovered. During the day, the office building had workers inside until 5:30 which made life in the annex quite difficult. If the workers were to hear the movement or voices of the members upstairs, they could call the police which would result in the capture of the Franks and van Daans. World War one saw many great airmen, but there were two that stood out among the rest; Captain Edward Rickenbacker and 2nd Lieutenant Frank Luke, Jr. These men both demonstrated courage and bravery that ultimately asked them for their life. Both men received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their deeds of bravery, as well as earning the title of Ace. An Ace is someone that has shot down at least five enemy planes. Rickenbacker was nicknamed “Ace of the Aces”, while Luke was the first of only two men to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Luke honored his country through his actions. Frank Luke Jr demonstrated superior characteristics that lead him to make a valuable contribution to World War I through bravery, skilled flying skills, and selflessness.
Fishing and hunting have been at the core of many American Indian cultures like the Nisqually since precontact. Indian hunting, fishing and gathering were conducted then—as they are now—not for sport, but for food and for a livelihood. This was well understood by the early colonists and later by the U.S. government. Thus, many of the treaties (e.g., Medicine Creek, 1854) negotiated between the federal government and Indian tribes in the nineteenth century contained provisions guaranteeing rights to hunt and fish. In the trea¬ty negotiated by Isaac Stevens, the tribe ceded to the U.S. some of the Nisqually vil¬lages and prairies, but Article Three reserved the tribe’s right to fish “at all usual and accustomed grounds and stations…in common with all citizens of the Territory.” (FL 12) But the growth of the European American population, and with it the proliferation of fenced lands, the destruction of natural habitat, and often the destruction of wildlife itself, drastically curtailed the Indians' ability to carry on these activities. Charles Wilkinson’s thesis declares that the “messages from Frank’s Landing” are “messages about ourselves, about the natural world, about societies past, about this society, and about societies to come.” (FL 6)
Approaching the coast of France, Martin rebukes the idea of visiting Paris for the city’s deceptive persona. Paris, as described by Martin, is a perpetual site for chaos and empty desires. While recounting Paris, Martin is also iterating the cycle of his and Candide’s life such as Candide losing his profits and Martin being used by his family. The context of chaos and pleasure is subtly revealing the internal conflict of Candide’s optimism. His philosophy allows him to suggest that when he is dosed with good fortune, all is good. However, Candide immediately is struck with ill-fortune and chaos. This leads to him pursuing pleasure once more, just to be placed in another chaotic environment. On an early morning in July of 1942, the Van Daans and Franks meet up for the first time at the annex. All of them are covered in layers of clothing to carry as much to their new home as possible. They are all introduced to each other. Living in the secret annex is Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, Peter Van Daan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank, Margot, and Anne Frank. Mr. Van Daan is a selfish, greedy man. Mrs. Van Daan likes the finer things, thinks pretty highly of herself and adores her husband. Peter is shy, quiet, and just truly doesn’t say much. Mr. Frank is a kind, caring, leading man. Mrs. Frank is motherly, caring, and sweet. Margo does as others say and tries to keep a low-key profile. Anne is wild and unique. She doesn’t let others push her around, and she is very independent. Everyone in the annex is very different.
Wisps of burnt-out curtains drape over shattered window frames, fluttering helplessly like a bird with injured wings. Pieces of wood collapse snapping once they hit the ground. Smoke swirls around in the wind. No sound can be heard except for the occasional sobs escaping the chapped lips of people visiting what is left of their homes. The once busy city of Amsterdam is now nothing but a city of forgotten souls. In 1942, the Franks and the Van Daans moved into a warehouse located in Amsterdam to escape the perilous world outside, where the Holocaust was taking place. Jews like the Franks and the Van Daans had their rights taken away from them. The Gestapo, the police working for the Nazis, rounded up people to be sent to concentration camps, where people worked to death. Margot Frank was one of them. Many Jews had to leave the country to escape, while the two families, and later on a man named Dussel, lived on the top floor of the warehouse called the Secret Annex. Living in such a small space and having sparse food with so many people was not easy. On weekdays, not a noise was to be made otherwise the workmen below would hear them. Food and other items had to be brought in by Miep and Mr. Kraler, who risked their lives to help the members of the Secret Annex. To keep herself company, Anne Frank wrote in her diary almost every day. Later on, her diary was published, and two authors decided that they would write a play based on the published diary, named The Diary of Anne Frank. Goodrich and Hackett created memorable characters in their play. Among these people, Otto Frank stood out, who emerged as a good leader because he put himself before others, made rough decisions when problems rose, and stayed positive and optimistic even dur...
The very popular dark comedy, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, showcases the similarities, and some differences between the twin characters, Dee and Dennis Reynolds, in many of its’ funniest episodes. In the show, Dee ( often referred to as “Sweet” Dee ) and Dennis have a rather unconventional brother-sister relationship. In their group of friends who are also coworkers, Dennis is viewed as somewhat a leader and superior to the others, while Dee is seen to be at the bottom of the ranks in “the Gang” and is often ridiculed. Although Dennis and Dee have a fierce sibling rivalry throughout many of the episodes, they are a lot more alike than they would presumably like to admit.

Both also had to deal with not having the freedom they were used to. Although they were on different sides of the Earth their time during the war was very similar yet different.

Then there's the people that help them which are Mr. Kraler and Miep. the Van Daan’s and Frank’s are in hiding because they were taking jews to concentration camps and had to go into hiding. Yelling, anger, and selfishness. This is what you usually get from Mr. Van Daan. In the Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, Mr. Van Daan is a very ill-tempered man, always yelling at the kids. He is also pretty self centered which leads him to be very hypocritical too. These three traits show strongly throughout the play when times her a little rough and there are a lot of quotes backing these claims up too.

Anne attended Amsterdam's Sixth Montessori School and throughout the 1930s experienced a normal childhood, free of anti-semitism. For her thirteenth birthday, Anne received the diary that would encase her everlasting story. On July 5th, 1942, Anne’s sister, Margot, received a notice to be deported to a work camp, leaving no choice but to go into hiding immediately. The Secret Annex, their place of hiding, was located in Otto’s Amsterdam office....
What if you were a holocaust survivor and asked to describe your catastrophic experience? What part of the event would you begin with, the struggle, the death of innocent Jews, or the cruel witnessed? When survivors are questioned about their experience they shiver from head to toe, recalling what they have been through. Therefore, they use substitutes such as books and diaries to expose these catastrophic events internationally. Books such as Maus, A survivor’s tale by Art Spiegelman, and Anne Frank by Ann Kramer. Spiegelman presents Maus in a comical format; he integrated the significance of Holocaust while maintaining the comic frame structure format, whereas comic books are theoretically supposed to be entertaining. Also, Maus uses a brilliant technique of integrating real life people as animal figures in the book. Individually, both stories involve conflicts among relationships with parents. Furthermore, Maus jumps back and forth in time. Although, Anne Frank by Ann Kramer, uses a completely different technique. Comparatively, both the books have a lot in common, but each book has their own distinctive alterations.
In the annex, life was rough, had to deal with many challenges. The annex was a small area so it was a hard place to take a lot of items. There was already of people living there, so if everybody brought a lot of items it would leave little room to move around, there wouldn’t be as much space in there. Certain items will have to be left behind because it could expose where you are, make too much noise or it would just take up too much space and it would there would be no use to it than just stay there. I would bring a cross because it will provide protection, safety, to rely on and for comfort.
