In life, everyone will encounter jobs, but not everyone will find their career. As Jobs hints in the previous quote, finding one’s career can be an arduous task, so what is the difference between a job and a career that makes this task worthwhile? According to Jobs, this difference lives in the measure of love involved, and fundamentally, he is correct. However, there are other aspects too. From their differing denotations to their differing connotations, jobs and careers contain important distinctions. First, based on observing each word’s respective definition, one can draw various conclusions about the differences in each word. For instance, according to dictionary.com, a job denotes as, “a paid position of regular employment”. Fittingly, this definition for a job has a simple, bland statement which focuses on nothing else other than the job. That’s because as a person, one does not enter a job to dedicate their life to it. The difference therefore, lies in the emotional value of the occupation, and the degree of satisfaction brought to the person. This begs the question- how might a job become a career? Since the inception of civilization, people have dedicated themselves to certain practices to obtain needed supplies. With the advancement of society, these practices have specialized into roles that society needed and have become jobs and careers. With these jobs and careers, people have struggled to find a difference between the two, if there is one. However, the two are very different. There are a multitude of differences between a job and a career, but the most distinct differences being the necessary skill, and dedication needed.

Although some people claim they are happy with the career they chose of the bat, choosing a career carefully is much more effective because in the long run you will feel content and appreciate more with the choice you made.

Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.
Many of my friends pick their careers based on money and trade skills that they have. I am proficient in art and design, but didn’t feel like that was what I wanted to do for my career. Your career shapes a huge portion of your life. It is what you do every day, for a large portion of your life. It is what I have prepared for the past 12 or so years of my life. It is way more than just money or a skill. I wanted to do something unique, something interesting, something that would inspire me to be a better human, something that would make me feel, something that is challenging, something that helped others, and above all, something that was rewarding and made me feel fulfilled.
In the book Outliers, and in the articles, “Meaningful Work”, “Do, Just, Do: A Journey to Meaningful, Satisfying work”, and “ You Wont Find Meaningful work Looking Outside Yourself”, The authors Malcolm Gladwell, Michael F. Steger, Lori Deschene, and Keven wood describe what the joy of meaningful is to them.Life is what you make of it and it’s and up to you to decide what you will get out of it. Some people may work eight hour shifts Monday through Friday miserable, exhausted, depressed, unhappy, and under a lot of pressure and stress from their jobs. Others may do the same, similar, or different jobs being comfortable, happy with life, and pleased with their job position. Your job should be one of the most important things to you because you are there on average forty hours a week and most of your time is spent there. It should be important that you enjoy what you do because it is practically your second home. Meaningful work is a job you enjoy doing, are compassionate about, never tired of, and do for the fulfillment of yourself , it is important to success because if one enjoys what they do opportunities in their career path will only expand.

There is a difference between a job and career. Anyone can get a job and earn money, but not everyone has a career. A career is an occupation that requires special training. A career is more stable and long term as opposed to a job. I strongly believe that becoming a physical therapist will satisfy me long-term; as a career. I will be stable, and also having fun at work. Many people dread going to work, but I know when I become a physical therapist, I will be looking forward to arriving at work.
Many people will say nursing is easy and it does not take skill. Or maybe they will even say anyone can be a nurse, but that’s not true. Nursing takes skills no one knew they had. It takes so much time and patience. But if someone claims to say “anyone can be a nurse”, then why is there such a high demand for employees in the profession? To those in the nursing field it is more than just a job, it is truly a lifestyle.
Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. According to Weintraub (2005), “the average worker spends only four years in a job and will have 12 jobs in as many as five career fields during his or her working life.” (para. 1) My first career was marriage and motherhood followed by a surprising healthcare career. What the future holds waits to be seen. With a bachelor of science degree in information technology the options are wide open.
