In 1931 an American writer named James Truslow Adams said “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” Adams said this because he understood what people wanted in America and what people strived to be, no matter the race or social class. The characters in A Raisin in the Sun were striving to achieve their dreams no matter what it took. The characters from A Raisin in the Sun have a large grasp on the importance of family and the American dream. Walter from A Raisin in the Sun is a very thoughtful and adventurous person. Walter tends to make costly decisions throughout the play. Walter tends to believe that his family does not trust him or believe him. Walter says “ Cause ain’t nobody with me! Not even my own mother!” Walter says this because he is trying to convince his mother to give him some money so that he can follow his dream of opening up a liquor store. Mama outlook on her family is that family everything to her. Mama tries her very best to maintain her family’s dignity, pride and happiness.
