Tony Buzan, is the creator of mind mapping and an expert on memory and the brain. In an interview conducted by Scholastic he stated, “Many think of memory as rote learning, a linear stuffing of the brain with facts, where understanding is irrelevant. When you teach it properly, with imagination and association, understanding becomes a part of it” (2011). In other words, it is important to make sure that students are not just remembering information just to pass the test, but remembering it in a way that they can use the information later on. Memory has play a key role in education because without it, students would not remember the concept of plot or a formula for a math problem. Episodic memories is a form of explicit memories. These memories deal with events, experiences and contextual knowledge (Mastin 2010). It is important that in order for students to transform an experience into an episodic memory they have to experience it for themselves. A teacher can improve a student’s episodic memories by increasing their curiosity, motivation, and involving the students senses (Jensen 2005).
The third subgroup of memories is reflexive memories. Reflexive memories is an example of an implicit memory. Reflexive memory deals with the body’s natural reflexes and or when something is repeated (Jensen 2005). An example of a reflexive memory is when someone closes their eyes when a ball is thrown at them. Teacher work with reflexive memories when they use flashcards in the classroom and fill in the blank assessments.
The final subgroup of memories is procedural memories. Procedural memories are considered implicit memories. These memories deals with body movement (Jensen 2005). Examples of procedural memories are riding a bike, the order of events that occur in the classroom, the steps in performing a lab, etc. Procedural memories are important to incorporate in a classroom because these memories can be easy attained. When teaching, teachers can have their students write down their vocabulary words three times. The first time the students write the vocabulary word they might make mistakes, however by the third time they will most like be able to spell that word with ease. But how are these memories
