This is my reflection over the book. I will be talking about what characteristics I liked and disliked the the best and the least, which one can I most relate to with my personality, hopes, and dreams, and what would characters be doing today if they were still alive.
I liked and dislike multiple characteristics in the novel. But, the one I liked the most was definitely Ponyboys characteristic of boldness. I though Ponyboy was acting very gallantly throughout the book. One of the characteristics I disliked the most was Johnny's characteristic of fearfulness. Almost every action Johnny did he was always scared, he was never bold or gallant.

The book had a few characters that I liked, but a lot of characters that I disliked. For example Yasmine was a character that I disliked. I didn’t like her because she brought pain to Paige’s life. Yasmine and Paige were best friends for months in Sixth grade. They were constantly doing fun activities together, like having sleepovers or planning each other’s birthday parties, but all that was ruined by a mistake Yasmine made. Many would say that the character Ponyboy should be the main hero of our story, but that’s just not the case. Ponyboy was easily pushed down, letting things get to him and letting his emotions take complete control. One push or slap from his brother and he runs away, like a cowardly lion scrambling into the tall grass of the savannah. Johnny on the other hand, is forced against abuse that no one should be able to be put through. Yet he stands his ground.
His parents died when he was young. He was nurtured by his older brothers. Pony has to struggle at the bottom of the social ladder. Like the people around him, he has to fight, steal and scare little kids. However, Pony remained a pure heart, a golden heart. He only fights when he has to defend himself. He kept his heart of sympathy, understanding of others and think for the others. Like in when the church was burned, he understands the situation of the teacher and children. So he risked his life to safe the kids. The most straight forward example and conclusion of Pony’s good heart is the word of Johnny, “Stay gold, Ponyboy, stay gold…” Moreover, Ponyboy is a thinker. He can think for the opposite side of his gang, the Socs. Although the Socs almost drowned him, he can still understand the Socs and didn’t be blinded by the hate. He in the chaos and impulsive world can see through the surface of the conflict and see the core of the world that people are the same. That is really amazing and Ponyboy does have the board mind of a hero.
Each of these characters posses a different personality which contributes to the book as a whole. Throughout the book I felt connected to one character, that character was George. George and I share similar qualities and our lifestyles can relate. One major characteristic I found in George is his ability to take the initiative in whatever he is doing, therefore showing his sense of leadership qualities. This caught my eye automatically since I am the type of person to stand up and demonstrate my leadership to others.
One example of Ponyboy being sensitive would be when he picks up the pieces of the broken glass so that no one would get a flat tire. This character can also be described as smart when Darry tells him how intelligent he is and that he has the brains to get a scholarship and go to college. Finally, this character can be considered brave when he risks his life to save the children stuck in the burning church. In this book, Ponyboy learns to deal with the right and wrong of society. He has light-brown hair, green-gray eyes and long hair. He is on the track team, he gets good grades and stays out of trouble. He likes to go to the movies and read books. On page 2 he tells us, “And nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do”. Ponyboy and Johnny were brave enough to run into a burning building to save a group of kids they didn't even know. “...so I slammed a big rock through the window and pulled myself in” (page 91). Ponyboy is also empathetic, he tries to understand everyone around him. At the drive-in he has a conversation with Cherry and she says, ¨Things are rough all over¨. Then Ponyboy replies, ¨I believe you...¨ (page 35). He even extends his empathy to Randy near the end. He and Randy had a conversation and afterwards Two-Bit asked, ¨What did he want? What did Mr. Super-Soc have to say?¨ Ponyboy replied, ¨He ain't a Soc, he’s just a guy. He just wanted to talk¨ (page 118).
Similar to my other two choices, his direct description, “If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny… He had big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair was jet-black and heavily greased,” made me remember him. The way Pony describes his past and home life with his father always abusing him and his mother harassing him, helped me truly sympathize and not forget him. The last item that made him strong and memorable was his actions. He killed Bob because he thought he was saving Pony and when he realized that was something terrible he decided to save those kids in the church and even though that killed him in the process, he believed giving his life for them was worth
This book has great balances of love interests, actions, and internal conflict with characters. It has an interesting story so far with new pieces coming up every few chapters that are very important. Like Al attacking Tris, Eric talking about Divergents and how the rebels must be eliminated. Tris and Four are developing feelings for each other, which I find weird because he is basically her teacher. They are only two years apart, so the relationship is not that awkward. In this journal I will be predicting, evaluating, and questioning.
In addition, arguably the most important out of the three characteristics is also included in the novel, which is the moment where everything clicks for the character. This occurs for Tom when he is hiding in the wilderness and finally understands what Casy has been talking about all along, which changes his outlook on the world. Johnny and Dally are both very contrasting characters and each play a vital role in both the novel and Ponyboy’s life. Johnny is a soft character who is regarded as the stereotypical Greaser. Dally is a rugged and rough character that is regarded as a hoodlum. Therefore, I believe that this paper has been able to answer the topic question and also support my thesis.
I could relate well to certain ideas in the novel that affect others or myself in our society today. In the
