When all of this is done they build the real thing.
In order to be any engineer, you must love math, science and solving problems. Whether it's figuring out how to erect a structurally sound skyscraper, design a more efficient car engine. Engineers at the most basic level are problem solvers. Engineering is a career based on logical, systematic problem solving, generally in high-tech, industrial, or scientific fields. Industrial engineers determine the most effective ways for an organization to use the basic factors of production—people, machines, materials, information, and energy—to make a product or provide a service (Occupational Outlook Hand Book). Engineers apply scientific and technical knowledge to address their problems and tasks faced by businesses and governments.
There is a difference, however, between a good professional and a good engineer. A good engineer understands the needs of a community and knows how to apply their technical knowledge to fulfilling those needs. They are able to go beyond common sense to benefit not only the company, but the society as a whole. A good engineer sees not only solutions, but also problems; they know there is always something to be improved upon, and make it their goal to make a difference. Their ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for those in their community, and are able to adapt available resources to reach this objective.
If hired by water utilities, civil engineers will design irrigation and sewer systems. They will also develop new methods to remove excess water after storms and floods. These civil engineers must also ensure that their water systems do not cause damage to the environment. Civil engineers hired by landfill management companies will design new landfill sites and monitor their operation. In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems. It opens up a world of opportunity to create innovative technology that influences many aspects of people’s lives, this giving an individual the power to make a difference. While I am deeply interested in the subjects that are the foundation of engineering, in addition I have many other personal reasons for pursuing civil engineering in specific.
