Kite Runner:

In The Kite Runner, Amir and Sohrab constantly face repercussions from events that took place in the past. Amir is haunted by his actions from 26 years ago. Amir and Sohrab are connected by this common hold that the past has on them; they are molded by it and it drives many of their actions throughout their lives. They both have tried to forget and move on, but the past never loosened the grip it had on them. Amir’s purpose in The Kite Runner is to make up for the wrongdoings of his youth. He specifically seeks to absolve his guilt of betraying his childhood best friend, Hassan. Amir stood back and did not intervene as Hassan was raped. This self-condemnation that he had from the past haunted him throughout his life and was a major factor in every decision that he made. “There was so much goodness in my life. So much happiness. I wondered whether I deserved any of it.”(183). He questions himself about what he deserves for the mistakes he has made in the past, he cannot live with the fact that he is happy and well off when he blames himself for completing ruining anothers life. Amir travels back to Kabul in attempt to make up for the injustices he once committed. Amir indicts himself for Hassan’s murder and for the current status of Sohrab, all events he truly believes were set in motion by his actions. Amir exhibits why the past cannot be buried, he is an example of how the past can affect things in the future and that there is no true way to be rid of it, no matter how hard he tries to push away his feelings of guilt from all those years ago, it finds a way to return. Sohrab the son of Amir's childhood friend Hassan is the boy Amir seeks out to redeem himself for his actions in the past. Nothing that happened to him could be forgotten or not have an everlasting effect on the boy. During a card game with Sohrab, “I put my arm on him, gingerly, but he flinched. He dropped his cards and pushed away on the stool.” (306). Amir non-threateningly placed a hand on Sohrab and he jumped; the sexual and physical abuse he suffered left him unable to be touched without being reminded of what he went through. The past cannot be pushed behind a partition from the rest of his memories, no, it will stick with him, never leaving his mind, shaping every decision and reaction he makes.
