Every thing in life is a learning experience whether you mean it to be or not, in fact most things we learn are by accident. Meaningful learning experience happens many times in lifetime, some teaches minor lesson and some teaches important lesson. Even sitting on the couch watching TV, you can learn something. When you're watching the news, you've learning about the society. I had learned a great many things after graduate from high school. It has change my thought toward life. I felt like I grow more smarter, more confident and, in many cases, wiser. I felt like I grew smarter after graduate from high school. To begin with, I was strongly belief that I probably couldn't make through high school because I came to United State with almost no English. The Texas state just have a new rule for high schooler to pass 15 STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness ) in order to graduate from high school in my freshman years. The new rule give me more stress every night but change to 5 in my sophomore year. I prayed to God every night to help me pass all my course and the state test. Ironically, I believe that my shyness, something that I consider a communication barrier, has ultimately led me to focus on a field for my life’s work: communications. I have many goals, but to accomplish these goals I have to get through the many obstacles that could get in the way. Even though, I am not finished creating my goals and aspirations, I already have many. The two most important are to be happy and successful. I want to be happy because even if I become rich or famous, if I am not happy in life nothing else would matter. Success for me is simply doing something that I've always wanted to do. Since I have entered college, I have noticed a number of things about myself. I used to think that I was outgoing and confident, but now I feel the opposite about me is true. I discovered that I have Attention Deficit Disorder and a learning disability and this has caused a drop in my confidence related to school as well as other areas of my life. This influenced me to change my major from journalism to speech pathology where there are always people finding new ways of helping others that are disabled in the realm of speech. The appeal of helping people rediscover their voice after they have lost it, or just finding their voice in general really called to me. Now my goals are, instead of being a journalist working at a magazine, to work at a clinic with adults who have suffered from strokes and have aphasia or to travel around the world to help children learn to speak who have had cleft palate surgeries. For me to be able to help people that have an impairment that hinders their lives like myself has become very important to me.
In his poem, The Road Not Taken, Robert Frost wrote, "Two roads diverge in the woods, and I took the one least traveled by/ And that has made all the difference." In this poem, the narrator had a choice of two roads. However, I've discovered that life is a little more complicated. Sometimes the path we embark on is not always the one we choose. Sometimes we are pushed or pulled in certain directions and we have to react to our environment.
Robert Leamnson’s essay “Learning (Your First Job)” effectively proposes the importance of learning by suggesting ways of making notes, studying, and doing assignments. Leamnson cannot stress it enough, how learning will not be accomplished unless you want to do it. If you do not have the want of learning then there is no point in doing it. High school education is so much different than your post-secondary education. The material that is being learned in the college classes is materials that will be useful for your later career. "The more we know the world around us, the more successful we will be." This quote, from the introduction of my high school chemistry book, was my driving force as a teenager to attend college. My expectations of college were to gain insight into a world that I had not yet discovered. I had high aspirations of receiving a good education and obtaining a good job when I graduated. But four years later when graduation day arrived, I felt unfulfilled. In evaluating my education, I realized that I learned how to get good, but not great grades. I learned how to study to make the most of my time. The focus I shared with many of my peers was not always to appreciate the information received, but rather, to value the counsel from someone else who previously took that professor's class and maybe to be lucky enough to get a hold of last semester's examinations. Basically, I acquired useful skills for any job: to follow directions, to give the boss what he or she was asking of me, and to network and gain insight from other colleagues. It was still disturbing to me that after four years of schooling, I felt I had not received the education I initially expected. Overall, college does not bring out the full academic potential of the students who invest the time and money into an education. Teachers need to set aside their biases and restructure and develop curriculum, as well as student-teacher relationships, in order to truly develop college students into freethinking, exploratory people.
High school trained me by actually taking responsibilities on my actions but also on my work. I concentrate way harder than I used to back in middle school since the grades are going to follow me through college. I have made myself want to finish my work because it will be way harder in the long run if I didn’t. I have learned how to better interact with other people. This sounds abnormal but it’s true. I used to hang out with only a small group of friends in middle school because I didn’t want to get to know other people.
