When the sky started to grow dark, and the clock struck quarter to seven, he left his house and set off towards town hall. The town was a strange shade of blue, glowing in the twilight, and there was no one on the streets. Instead of street lamps, the wide avenues of Golden Oaks were lit by small braziers that lined the sidewalks. They burned a bright orange against the blue of the evening. The walk was short, and the night was warm, but still Jeb dreaded it. He was already half asleep, and he wanted nothing more than to go to sleep. But he knew that he had to go. The feast was in his honour, and everyone had been so nice to him. This is the perfect town, Jeb thought. He approached the door, taking the wide stone steps two at a time, and knocked on the door three times. Tap tap tap. Nothing happened. He tried again, tap tap tap. Still nothing. Jeb was about to knock again when suddenly the door swung open, and behind it was Mayor Bishop Burnfield, his eyes gleaming in the ruddy orange light of the torches.
“Good evening, Jeb, how are ya?” He asked, smiling.
“I’m great!” Jeb replied enthusiastically.
“Come on in!” Bishop waved him into the foyer, which had high ceilings, and a crystal chandelier hanging from the rafters.
“Are we ready to eat? I’m starving!” Jeb said, his stomach growling like a hungry tiger.
“Almost. We’re just preparing the meat.”
