Gender Has Everything to Do with It What does gender have to do with it? Everything. From the moment our sex chromosomes are paired to when we are going to die, gender plays an important role. All across the lifespan psychologists have proven statistics that show the difference in males and females from their cognitive ability, preferences in toys and activities, growth patterns, behavior, and even health risk. Also, society plays a big role in influencing gender. There are also many different theories about gender and gender roles and why they occur. Rathus states that by 24 months, both boys and girls appear to be aware of which behaviors are considered appropriate or inappropriate for their genders, according to their cultural stereotypes. Thus, it appears girls and boys show a preference for gender typical stereotypical before they have been socialized and possibly before they understand their own sex (127). I am sure you are wondering how? There are many different theories on gender. That include the roles of evolution and heredity, which believe gender differences were fashioned by natural selection in response to problems in adaption that were repeatedly encountered by humans over thousands of generations. Social cognitive theory claims that children learn much about what society considers “masculine” or ‘feminine” by observing and imitating models of the same gender. The last theory is the cognitive-development theory that states children form concepts about gender and then fit their behavior to the concepts. Theories explain it and Psychologist prove it. Some might say because I believe there are differences in gender that I believe limits should put on us, but I do not believe our gender should hold us back in any way. My daughter’s favorite color is blue, and she is an amazing soccer player. So, this year she wanted blue soccer cupcakes for her party. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that even if people see the color blue and sports as a boy thing. Maria do Mar Pereira, the deputy director for the University of Warwick’s Centre for the Study of Women and Gender conducted a study over a three-month period to observe gender roles and she stated “girls who enjoyed sports often avoided physical activity at school because they assumed it wouldn’t be a feminine thing to do, they worried they might look unattractive while running, or they were mocked by their male peers for not being good enough.” I am so thankful that is not the case with my daughter. She knows about gender, and knows she is different from her brother, but I do not want that to hold her
