What does it mean to be courageous? The dictionary definition of courage is “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery”. The dictionary says to enable the mind to face a danger, for example, a 21-year old named Tommy had just came out of a burning building and he realizes his 10-year old sister is still inside. Tommy doesn’t wait for firemen to come, he gets the courage himself to save his sister even though he can get hurt or killed. This story talks about an act of courage the character gets and saves his sister’s life by putting himself at risk. To be courageous means to stand up for your friends or to stand up for yourself. Rosa Parks lived in a time with no civil rights.

Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella.
