When Aristotle first defined the word community, it meant a group of men who had shared values. Throughout history, that definition has been changed and refined to gain a new meaning. For example, people can be a part of many different smaller communities, and these little communities fit together like puzzle pieces and create a larger picture. To me, community means just that. Working hard to make a difference within either the smaller niche or, the greater community, it means that everyone has connections to each other. At the University of Alberta, I can bring the experience and knowledge I gained from learning form my community to create a community for myself and those I meet that will feel just like home. Being at university is a lot of work and academics, but it is important to build a strong group of friends to be there to support you when you need it. When attending a university that is as large as the University of Alberta, it seems to be a daunting task to try and make a difference in some of the students or faculties lives. However making a difference doesn't need to be a tremendous feat. Making a difference can be as easy as buying them a coffee or helping them with a math question, brightening someone's day can have a bigger affect than what might be anticipated. …show more content…

It may have been the way I was raised, or what I learned in the times I spent at each of the four schools I have attended in my life, but mistreating someone will never get me any further. I want to create a community for myself at where those apart of it are there because of a mutual trust and friendship. If I can help someone feel welcome in an unfamiliar place full of unfamiliar faces, I will have sparked the growth of a new community where everyone who might feel alone in a sea of undergraduates can find their own
