One of the three challenges that Americans faced in the 20th and 21st centuries and still face is prejudice. People such as: Native Americans, Jews, Hispanics, Homosexuals, and others that are deemed wrong by certain American standards are targeted by prejudice. In “On the Pulse of Morning”, Maya Angelou states “Face down in ignorance. Your mouths spilling words armed for slaughter.” Angelou illustrates how people have been verbally assaulted and how others simply turn away or pretend it doesn’t happen. Another challenge that Americans are faced with is poverty. Many people who were in poverty were required to work harder and if they were unable to work they would likely become homeless.
