In the year 1789, the first presidential election took place under the new constitution. The changes between then and now are too many to count. There have been amendments to the constitution, technology has enhanced, communication is better, strategies have grown and the world is a different place. In every election, each president had his or her own strengths and weaknesses of their time. In the presidential election of 2012 between Obama and Romney, many economic and personal characteristics held importance on Election Day. In this research paper, I will look at the issues that voters had and discuss how each candidate addressed them. I will also share other important information that contributed to the outcome of the election.

According to Holian & Prysby, voters base characteristics off four personality traits as most relevant for presidential candidates. These include leadership, competence, integrity, and empathy (2012). Obama strengths were integrity and empathy. Taking the time to personalize messages to people and groups showed that Obama had every person’s best interest at heart showing empathy. While, Romney strength was leadership, like many Republicans. However, Obama matched Romney in the leadership characteristic, which is hard for a Democrat to do. Romney’s weaknesses were honesty and empathy. Romney saw everyone as a whole and told the people what he thought the people wanted to hear. Obama won over Romney in characteristics because as a strategy, he made Romney’s character appear negative.
