Langston Hughes, a remarkable and talented social activist, poet, and writer, displays the realistic internal struggles of African Americans through his writing. Hughes wrote during an era where social inequality weighed heavily on the American nation. Hughes was able to display the internal conflicts of frustrated African Americans, in regards to their goals and dreams, in his poem, “Harlem”. Utilizing poetic devices, Hughes is able to successfully display the emotional conflicts of the frustrations that African Americans faced in regards to their goals and dreams during the 1950’s. One of the most essential poetic devices Hughes uses in “Harlem” is the use of figurative language. Through the use of figurative language Hughes is able to Hughes did an incredible job of creating visualizations of how African Americans felt about their goals, dreams, and self-esteem. Hughes strategically utilized this poetic device to portray how challenging, and nearly impossible, it was for African American’s to achieve ambitions and goals during an era of social inequality. The primary role for figurative language is to force readers to imagine what the author means with an expression. Hughes straightforwardly asks the general audience, “What happens to a dream deferred?” in his opening line (line 1). Following this sentence are a series of comparisons that arouse the creative mind to connect the idea of African American’s and their dreams to uninspiring images. Immediately following the opening sentence are a pair of lines that provoke the creativity of the reader’s mind. “Does it dry up/ like a raisin in the sun?” (lines 2-3). These two lines reveal an image of a raisin slowly withering away under the excruciating heat of the sun. Raisins begin as grapes, but under extreme heat and pressure from the sun, they gradually start The pain within this poem can still be found within parts of our community in today’s society. Even if these poems had the same theme of the delayment of a dream, each poet’s vision towards this dream is explored differently, where readers are able to grasp both the effects and potentials of a dream deferred, through the use of imagery. Nonetheless, both poems had fulfilled the role of many distinguished poems during the period; to communicate African-Americans’ desires to live a life of equality and free from prejudice.

He writes about how he is currently oppressed, but this does not diminish his hope and will to become the equal man. Because he speaks from the point of view of an oppressed African-American, the poem’s struggles and future changes seem to be of greater importance than they ordinarily would. “Harlem” by Langston Hughes is a poem that talks about what happens when we postpones our dreams. The poem is made up of a series of similes and it ends with a metaphor. The objective of the poem is to get us to think about what happens to a dream that is put off, postponed; what happens when we create our very own shelve of dreams? The “dream” refers to a goal in life, not the dreams we have while sleeping, but our deepest desires. There are many ways to understand this poem; it varies from person to person. Some may see this poem as talking about just dreams in general. Others may see it as African-American’s dreams.
This poem is written from the perspective of an African-American from a foreign country, who has come to America for the promise of equality, only to find out that at this time equality for blacks does not exist. It is written for fellow black men, in an effort to make them understand that the American dream is not something to abandon hope in, but something to fight for. 1920’s Harlem was a time of contrast and contradiction, on one hand it was a hotbed of crime and vice and on the other it was a time of creativity and rebirth of literature and at this movement’s head was Langston Hughes. Hughes was a torchbearer for the Harlem Renaissance, a literary and musical movement that began in Harlem during the Roaring 20’s that promoted not only African-American culture in the mainstream, but gave African-Americans a sense of identity and pride.

Moreover, the speakers curiosity in the poem addresses many themes such as; limitations, dreams, hopes and plans. One of the most successful poets in this time was Langston Hughes. “Harlem” was one of Hughes’s popular poems during the 1950’s.
