In Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, talks about the future American society where the government have outlawed books, and technology is preferred. Firemen burn any books that are found. The novel follows a fellow fireman, Guy Montag, who never questions the destruction and the actions he has caused until he meets quirky neighbor, Clarisse. She introduces Montag to the past where people did not live in fear where one shares their knowledge through books instead of television. The effects of technology on this contemporary setting shows how the characters are emotionally attached to their televisions and the dangers of technology. When Montag convinced himself that the Hound despises him; however the Captain reassured him that the Hounds has no emotion and that “‘all those chemical balances and percentages on all of us here in the House are recorded in the master file downstairs. It would be easy for someone to set up a partial combination on the Hound’s ‘memory,’ a touch of amino acids, perhaps’” (26). This shows how advance technology is during this time. They have given the Hound the power of human emotion. This also shows a foreshadowing of a technological apocalypse and rebellion. Another example, when Faber and Montag are running away from the government. When arriving to safety at the train tracks, Faber signals Montag to follow him and describes as, “He took Montag quickly into the bedroom and lifted a picture frame aside, revealing a television screen the size of a postal card. ‘I always wanted something very small, something I could talk to, something I could blot out with the palm of my hand, if necessary, nothing that could shout me down, nothing monstrous big.’” (132-133) Faber recognizes the dangers of technology and its capability to rebel against humans. His way of preventing the start of technological apocalypse is by keeping the threat small, literally. Overall, Fahrenheit 451 is a novel that brings the effects on technology to light by explaining the emotional attachment towards technology
