World War I started on July, 28 1914 and ended on November, 11 1918. The World War started after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. There were two sides the Entente Powers, who were the allies, who consisted of Russia, France, Britain and the U.S and all of their allies. The other side was the Central Powers of Germany, Austro-Hungary, Turkey, and all of their allies. Many other countries played small parts on both sides. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the main reason the war started. Austria-Hungary blamed the assassination on Serbia. This lead to Austria-Hungary invading Serbia. Serbia was an allie of Russia so this lead to the Russians declaring war on Austria-Hungary. Germany, who was an allie of Austria-Hungary, then declared war on both on Serbia and Russia. This triggered a chain of events that lead to Germany and its allies against Russia and its allies. Countries caught in the cross fire also joined in the war. …show more content…

On April 6 1917 the United States and others joined the Entente Powers. After the October Revolution Russia left the Entente Powers and ended formal involvement in the war. This lead to the five Great Powers which consisted of the United States, the French, the British, Italy, and Japan. Britain, France, Italy, and Japan would later become permanent members of the League of Nations council. The United States was supposed to be the fifth permanent member left because the US Senate voted on March 19 1920 against the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles, this ended up preventing American participation in the
