Introduction
Sneakers are a kind of shoes which sole are flexible rubber, and the upper part is made of leather. These types of shoes were designed for outdoor activities mainly as sportswear, but over the recent years have seen changes and modifications and are worn modernly for functions that are not formal. They were worn during sporting activities such as tennis, basketball, baseball, athletics and other physical sports.
In England, these kinds of shoes are known as “trainers.” The names vary in different English-speaking countries in Africa, Australia, and Asia. The name sneakers came by the fact that these shoes were quiet being made of rubber soles. The upper part of the shoe made of canvas was below the ankle, but as time went by, the top was made to reach the ankle or just above the ankle. The design started to vary depending on the use of the shoes, most of them that were gripped were used for sporting activities especially track events. There was massive development on the sneaker shoes due to competitions from various brands such as Nike and Adidas. Like fashion, the sneaker is industry is growing each day with new designs each day from the different brands. While reading the De-Orbit Burn module book, I noticed that the origin of the modern midsole for athletic shoes originates from lunar boots used on Apollo missions (Texas, 2013). As a distance runner, I was interested to say the least, so I immediately looked up the correlation of lunar boots to athletic shoes for myself. It did not take long before I came across an article by Jim Sam entitled Technological Spinoffs: Spinoffs from the Space Program. According to this article, “Technology originally developed for the boots worn on the moon, has now been applied to athletic shoes in the mid-sole section. The technology improves shock absorption, stability, and motion control,” (n.d.). It was then that I realized that, thanks to athletic sneakers, we are all walking in the shoes of astronauts.
Keds is a leading American brand of canvas shoe with rubber soles. Keds was founded in the year 1916 by U.S. Rubber. The shoe brand was later on purchased by Stride Rite Corporation, and is presently owned by Wolverine World Wide. While selecting a name, the first choice was Peds, from the Latin meaning foot, but that name was previously a trademark. Keds were first mass-marketed as canvas-top "sneakers" in 1960. They became known as sneakers because the rubber soles permitted sneaking around silently.
