This essay will discuss how weakness, courage and truth is seen and how it makes an impact on the outcome of the play’s events.
Many characters show weakness in The Crucible. Such as, Mary Warren she is shy and submissive in the play. She is at first siding with the court and simply playing along until John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth is arrested. Such as Giles Corey, he is a very elderly man who is just focused on getting his wife, Martha, out of jail. Giles does not try to defy the court and uses the opinion of the village to try to free, Martha. However Giles says that he knows a good man but will not say his name to the court, this results in his arrest. He courage is unmatched in The Crucible. The most courageous factor of Giles is that he will not tell the court the man’s name, even near death, he shows he is truly courageous by simply saying “more weight” and then dying. It affects the play because it possibly encourages Proctor to not confess either.
Truth is not shown much throughout the play, it is more based upon being true to yourself. John Proctor shows truth within himself by realizing that the girls in the court are lying. He tries to show the court that they are lying but they still believe the girls in the end. Soon after Proctor is put in prison and becomes a broken man. The court tries to get him to confess to witchcraft and he does sign the paper. However the truth in himself shines through because he knows his reputation would be ruined. Arthur Miller’s masterpiece, The Crucible, is a work of art inspired by actual events as a response to political and moral issues. Set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, The Crucible proves to have its roots in events of the 1950’s and 1960’s, such as the activities of the House Un-American Committee and the “Red Scare.” Though the play provides an accurate account of the Salem witch trials, its real achievement lies in the many important issues of Miller’s time that it dealswith.
Context: This part of the text is included at the beginning of the drama, telling the audience about Salem and its people. The author explains how a theocracy would lead to a tragedy like the Salem witch-hunts. This is the initial setting and is based on the principle that some people should be included and some excluded from society, according to their religious beliefs and their actions. This is basically the idea that religious passion, taken to extremes, results in tragedy. Miller is saying that even today extremes end up bad- communism, like strict puritans, was restrictive and extreme. It only made people suffer.
In this act he finds the goodness in himself to take responsibility for something he did not do just to make up for his sins. He says to Elizabeth, “Spite only gives me silent. It is hard to give a lie to dogs…” (4.136) He wants to confess, but he has to find the courage in him to confess it. He has to swallow his pride in order to confess of something he did not do. After he finds the courage to confess, Danforth makes him sign a confession statement, but he cannot. In support of this Proctor says, “I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough!” (4.142) Proctor has already confessed and he feels as if that is already enough, but he has to sign the confession or he will be hung. He finds the courage to sign it but then rips it apart before it is hung upon the church, and he could not build up the courage to re-write it. This leads him to being executed.
