The issue of our watersheds is that there is too much waste such as plastics polluting the water which affects our watersheds. A solution to this problem is to implement more recycling bins and put out more awareness signs beginning at our school. The amount of water that is potable and useful to humans as well as animals, is only 2.5%. If we do not do anything about our watershed, the amount of useful water would only decrease. We live in the North Saskatchewan River Watershed, which is over 57,000 square kilometers, and home to 1.2 million people. It kicks off at the glaciers in Banff and Jasper and drains down into the Hudson Bay. As it progresses down, many rivers, such as the Brazeau, Nordegg, and Clearwater stream into our watershed, …show more content…

Many plastic products such as plastic water bottles and plastic grocery bags are poorly disposed and end up in our water system. Plastic affects our water by releasing harmful chemicals into the soil, which can later on seep into our groundwater and other water sources. Most plastic is not easily biodegradable. The plastic in our oceans annually take the lives of one million seabirds and 50 thousand marine mammals. If we keep on disposing our plastics carelessly, by 2050, there will be more plastic in our water than there will be fish. Since water is key to life, we do not want it to be badly affected. Every year, the plastic that gets thrown away is enough to circle around the world four times! To improve our watershed we can encourage people to recycle more and ban certain harmful waste …show more content…

Many believe that recycling will barely impact our environment and many believe that all plastic material is organic and can biodegrade. Those individuals are incorrect, most plastics are not biodegradable and can harm the environment which includes our water sources. Our solution of banning plastic water bottles will benefit the environment by decreasing the amount of pollution in our area and increasing the water quality. It is not just beneficial for our planet but for ourselves as well. When our school community starts using more reusable water bottles that are safer for nature rather than disposable ones, they’ll save money, live healthier, and take part in a movement for global sustainability. Additionally, individuals will no longer have to worry about disposing the bottles in the right
