Life in the South was just about slavery or also called "peculiar institution," it was horrible because they would treat the slave really bad. The slaves would have to try to survive and fight back but a lot of slaves would end up dying. Life under slavery was unfair.

Slave life was horrible because they would treat the slaves bad. Wives and husband were often sold to different slaveholders and they would be separated. Slaves suffered cruel treatment, they labored from dawn until dusk at backbreaking tasks. Slavery grew in the south with the growth of the cotton industry. There masters punished the slaves by mostly whipping them and sometimes they would whip them until death. African American's created there own culture, fellowship, and community. A lot of slaves, Christianity was there religion of hope and resistance. According to the text book it says, "They prayed fervently for the day when they would be free from bondage." What helped them resist their master was Christianity because it gave them hope. A way they resisted against their master was that the slaves would refused to obey their owners. The slaves would also refuse to work. The slaves would brake there working tools so they would have an excuse to not work and they would also act like they were sick, so they wouldn’t have to work. Some slaves would even learn how to read and write. Some slaves would want to escape so they would use the underground rail road and escape North. Slaves rebelled against owners in groups.
