Mary Tudor justifiedly earned the moniker Bloody Mary for her burning of Protestants at the stake. She was the first living daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife. She lived through many familial hardships before gaining the throne at the age of 37 only to die after five years as the Queen of England and Ireland. Her rule was one of the least favorable, as during it she attempted to convert England back to Catholicism and regressed the reformation that was set into action during Henry VIII’s reign. Mary’s struggles with her family, troubled path to the throne, and her controversial ideologies and decisions lead her to have a tragic life along with an infamous reign. Mary took control as queen on July 6, 1553 at the age of 37 (World Biography). People were doubtful of her rule as she was the first woman to do so along with the fact she was unmarried and didn’t have children. It was rare for a woman of her age to have children, however she surprised everyone by marrying Prince Philip II of Spain. The announcement of her marriage caused three insurrections and even her council had advised her not to marry the Spaniard (Historic). The marriage to Philip was out love on Mary’s side, however Philip did it as a power move to have more control of Europe. Mary quickly after made another bold move that angered her people. She reenacted the Heresy Laws and began to persecute Protestants who rebelled against the reinstated Catholic Church (World Biography). Under this law around 300 Protestants were burned at the stake, earning Mary the nickname Bloody Mary. Her rule ended after five years when she died of a lifelong disease, and afterwards the English broke off ties with Spain and never despised the Catholic church even
