War Pigs by Black Sabbath
The song "War Pigs," by Black Sabbath, argues the fact that, during the Vietnam War, politicians were willing to start wars and cause destruction because they were not the ones in danger of losing their lives or being injured. The song suggests that the politicians of the 1960's and 1970's started a war for fun, treating soldiers in America's army as "pawns in chess." By the end of the song, the lyrics say that those men and women will get what they deserve when their day of judgment comes.
The first verse of the song begins by comparing the generals of the United States Army to a group of witches who have "evil minds that plot destruction" and act as a "sorcerer of Death's construction." The songwriters are saying that the generals and politicians meet with each other and think of new ways to cause destruction and chaos for nothing but their own amusement. The last part of the first verse says that they only have hatred for mankind and are trying to brainwash citizens of the United States to think that the war is a good cause so there will not be much protesting and opposition.
The next verse begins by saying politicians hide when it comes to backing up their words. "They leave their role to the poor," meaning they would never go
fight their own battle, they leave it to the unfortunate soldiers who have to die for the fight the government started. The second half of this verse hints at the fact that the politicians treat the war they started as a game, using the people under their control as pieces in a chess game. It ends by saying "wait 'till their judgment day comes," meaning they will be punished in their next life for the mistakes they made while they were playing games with peoples' lives.
The final verse deals with judgment day and how the "war pigs" act now that the war is over and they have to take responsibility for their actions while they played their game. "Day of judgment, God is calling, on their knees the war pigs crawling, begging mercies for their sins, Satan, laughing, spreads his wings." This quote expresses how the politicians will most likely act when their day of judgment comes. Now that their fun is over, they will beg and plead for forgiveness from God, but it is too late.
The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial issues in American history. It is no secret that the American public was not in favor of this war, which is why the government’s decision to keep the US involved for over ten years created such a disconnect between America’s people and their government. In the third verse the Temptations sing, “People all over the world are shouting 'End the war.'” The Temptations bravely attack the government, addressing their continuation of a war no one wants. Although The Temptations avoid explicitly naming the war, or the government as the guilty party, it is evident that this is a criticism, or at least an acknowledgement of a predicament America found itself in.
The strongest part of the song is where it says, “I keep my toes on the party line/ There is nothing wrong dear, don’t think twice”. In conclusion, the concept that propaganda is a brainwash becomes clear. The government changes the way that reality looks by altering the past, using pure power and propaganda.
Society wants soldiers to believe that war is glorious. But it is not. Society wants soldiers to believe war is an adventure. But it is not. Society wants soldiers to believe that our enemy is the only enemy, that our cause is the only cause, that our people are the only people. But there are many enemies, many causes and many peoples. According to Paul, all these causes are equally ignoble, and none of these enemies are worthy of being slaughtered en masse. For Paul, as for many people, past, present, and future, war is simply unacceptable, and nothing can repair the damage it does.
The story of the Black Hearts Brigade, told by Jim Frederick, starts out with the 1st Battalion of the 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division in the summer of 2005. The author starts with a brief chapter of the events that unfolded when four soldiers of this battalion went to a house, raped a girl and killed her and her family. In the first part of the book Frederick explains the grand strategy the US was taking in Iraq at the time, the history of the area named the triangle of death, and how the 1-502nd did in their pre-deployment training. The main focus in Iraq at the time was getting south Baghdad under control. South Baghdad, otherwise known as the triangle of death, had a very rich history due to its location (right between the Tigris and Euphrates River). The current issue talked about in the book was the growing insurgency of both Sunni and Shiite groups in that area.
All our senses are assaulted: we see newly dead soldiers and long-dead corpses tossed up together in a cemetery (Chapter 4); we hear the unearthly screaming of the wounded horses (Chapter 4); we see and smell three layers of bodies, swelling up and belching gases, dumped into a huge shell hole (Chapter 6); and we can almost touch the naked bodies hanging in trees and the limbs lying around the battlefield (Chapter 9). The crying of the horses is especially terrible. Horses have nothing to do with making war. Their bodies gleam beautifully as they parade along--until the shells strike them. To Paul, their dying cries represent all of nature accusing Man, the great destroyer.
The metaphor was used exclusively to keep the state out of the church's business, not to keep the church out of the state's business. The political divide in the United States is very bad. The two main political parties are the democrats and the republicans. The two parties dislike each other and each other's views. Abortion, health care, illegal immigration, the death penalty, euthanasia, the right to bear arms global warming, and the separation of church and state are all just very few reasons the United States is divided. Looking at verse six, and two, it is easy to see when they are singing “So do we, so do we” that fear takes over as all the injured dying men think that their families will never know what happened to them. They will be lost and forgotten forever. (A Tisket A
... What it really means is that your heart, your soul, your mind, and your body are where the dispossessed are. Your mind, soul, and heart need to be reconciled to God.
In Anthem, the Council of Vocations took away freedom from people by assigning each person jobs, which also determined how they lived their lives. In relations to the quote, the Council of Vocations believed that they knew what the people wanted so they delivered it. However, Prometheus,
“I look at you, my people. I see you degraded, hungry, poor, thirsty, beaten and wounded, torn and martyred, no longer a giant; the light of your countenance has faded… you are wretched, very wretched, no one as wretched as you - only wretched, nothing else! You crawl in the mire and your little ones cry deafeningly”
Bravery is the quality of a person who displays courage and fearlessness in the face of danger. Such qualities show splendor and magnificence in a person. Fear and terror sometimes hinder the determination someone can show. Overcoming this fear is what portrays bravery. In Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms, Frederick Henry shows bravery by freely joining the Italian army, risking his life for some ambulance drivers and swimming to freedom, being shot at the whole way.
In the third stanza, the language becomes much darker, words like: anger, explode, and against make this stanza seem even more warlike than the first stanza.
“If we must die, let not be like hogs hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, while round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, making their mock at our accursed lot. If we must die, O let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we deft Shall be constrained to honor us though dead! O kinsmen! We must meet the common foe! Though far outnumbered let us show us brave, And for their thousand blows deal one deathblow! What though before us lies the open grave? Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack, pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!”
It implies, “With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.”
