The War of 1812 After twenty years that the revolutionary war ended in 1783, the country had not yet achieved economic independence. The war of 1812 took place from the year 1809 to 1815. Many at the time of the War of 1812 considered it to be a "Second War for American Independence," linkages stood strongly in many minds. The cause of the war began in a sequence of economic sanctions imposed by the British and French who were against the US as a part of Napoleonic Wars and American fury at British practice of impressments, after the Chesapeake incident of 1807. In response to the 1806 British Order Council, which crippled American trade, the US who was under Jefferson, tried various retaliatory embargoes. These embargoes harmed the US more than they did to Britain, angering American citizens and providing support to War Hawks in Congress like Henry Clay.
